Reykjavik: What should we bring for an hotel stay?

Hotels in Reykjavik are modern and comfortable, with the majority providing essentials like towels, bedding and toiletries. But the number one item you need to pack when visiting Iceland is your bathing suit! Whether you're hitting the hotel pool or sauna, the world famous Blue Lagoon, or venturing out to a mountain hot spring, something for swimming in is essential.

We also recommend packing weather-appropriate clothing. Iceland has a very changeable climate and even in the summer you might experience cooler temperatures. In the winter you will need thermals and warm layers, especially if you're planning on whale watching or exploring the glaciers.

Iceland is easier to reach than you think; many airlines offer direct flights at just a few hours travel time. Once you land, many hotels offer a free shuttle bus service for transfers, but you'll have the option of car hire, reliable public transport or taxis as well.

The opinion of the Voyage Prive travel expert on hotels in Reykjavik

Reykjavik is a brilliant choice if you want a mixture of things to see and do. In the city, there are museums, galleries, and the famous Hallgrimskirkja church, along with the historic harbour and many fantastic restaurants. Why not get the most from the city by staying in Fosshotel, or the Konsulat hotel?

Venturing outside the capital, you'll be greeted by windswept landscapes and active geysers, with roaming herds of characteristic Icelandic horses. We recommend the Hotel Husafell as one of the best stays for experiencing the beautiful scenery.

Reykjavik: The beating heart in a land of ice and fire

Hotel was on outskirts of Reykjavik but easily accessible on foot if a trip to centre was desirable. Also a regular bus service into the city, with a bus stop across the road. Restaurants were close by for evening meals with a choice of cuisine. There was a lovely park with zoo across the road from hotel .Hotel was warm and comfortable and fitted out to high standard. Very clean and great power shower! We would love to go back some day and would highly recommend this hotel.

We booked the Alda as part of a short break through Voyage Prive. It proved to be an excellent choice. Located conveniently at one end of the main shopping area and very close to bus stop 10 where the excursions and transfers drop off and collect. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful. You're issued with a mobile phone to help you find your way around Reykjavik. Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the road but still very quiet. Very comfortable beds. Not a huge choice in the breakfast buffet but still more than adequate. The bar is the main meeting place and, if you're used to London prices, the bar prices won't come as a great shock as we had been led to believe. We ate one night in the hotel which was excellent. At lunch the next day whilst waiting for the airport transfer, I had some of the best fish and chips I've ever tasted!

Review
We spent a week in this modern hotel, ideally located a few minutes walk from the sea, from the most commercial street in Reykjavik allowing easy access to all the monuments to visit (maximum 20 minutes on foot). Very friendly welcome in the image of Dagmara, always smiling with customers and ready to help at all times. She managed to change our room (at our request) when the hotel was full. The rooms are quite simple but with exceptional bedding. Housekeeping was very good and thorough every day. Excellent full and varied international breakfast. A breakfast is ready to go when you have to catch your plane at dawn! In addition you will find coffee and pastries all night long in the hotel lobby.
