Weekend breaks to Brussels, the epicentre of European culture
Table of contents
Enjoy a captivating weekend in Brussels, the perfect place to explore European culture whilst staying in luxury accommodation.
Brussels is a haven of architectural treasures and cultural delights
It’s the administrative capital of the European Union, insanely diverse when it comes to culture, and boasts centuries of stunning architecture all waiting to be explored. The streets are lined with a stunning blend of decadent art nouveau buildings, sophisticated 19th century mansions and 60s developments. One of the best places to start exploring the gems of this city is the Grand Palace, the central square that includes a number of attractions from the Town Hall to the Museum of Chocolate and Cocoa. You can only reach this beauty on foot as you enter from one of six narrow alleys and are greeted by the sight of towering spires and baroque architecture.
Brussels also boasts several gorgeous churches and cathedrals that date back centuries. The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is one of the most notable, taking roughly 300 years to complete. It dates back to the 13th century and was heavily influenced by the Gothic style construction at the time. The Eglisé Notre-Dame du Sablon is also worth a visit, another Gothic style church with an interesting history. It was adapted in the 15th century from a former chapel due to droves of pilgrims who came to visit the Madonna statue, said to have healing powers. Besides the history, it is incredibly beautiful in itself with colourful stained glass windows and beautiful statues in the grounds.
Full of oddities and attractions waiting to be explored
Being such a tapestry of cultures and diversity, Brussels is home to a number of eclectic attractions and little oddities that make for memorable moments, whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or a family. The Mini-Europe Park should be on the must-see list for any traveller heading to Brussels; it’s filled with iconic landmarks from all across Europe in miniature form. You can come face to face with the not-so-imposing Mount Vesuvius or a mini Eiffel Tower.
Nearby, the Atomium is also worth a visit; a large construction of 9 spheres (or “atoms”) left over from the 1958 World Expo. You can explore inside some of the spheres where you’ll find plenty of things to see and do. As you explore the city you’ll come across more museums than you can count, and intriguingly there’s even a Comic Book Route chronicling the history of this city as the birthplace of many comic book figures. Along the route enjoy colourful murals of some of your favourite characters including the likes of TinTin.
Brussels is as good at its chocolate as it is its culture
When it comes to edibles, Belgium is renowned for its world-class chocolate, sending lovers of the stuff into frenzy at the mere thought of it. So what would be a weekend in Brussels without even sampling some of this sweet treat? You’ll find chocolatiers and chocolate shops all across the city and even a museum dedicated to the subject.
