Athens – it's the real deal
If you are a culture buff, Athens is a must-see city, and you'll probably need to go more than once. With 2,500 years of history either on display or buried beneath concrete and brick, it's a hugely popular venue, which makes it all the more important that the savvy traveller seeks out great deals before setting off.
Despite Greece's well-publicised economic woes, tourists are extremely well catered for in the Greek capital, and so it will pay to check out our fantastic Athens deals before heading off for an unforgettable city break. The Greeks will certainly welcome you – tourism accounts for almost a fifth of their economy and, however you choose to spend your time there, you can be assured of great deals in Athens.
Acropolis, the height of good taste
Of course, the most popular attractions remain the oldest ones. The Acropolis towers above the mish-mash of modern streets below, attracting up to 3 million visitors every year. Yes, it gets busy but, no matter how luxurious an Athens holiday deal you've booked, you really should visit this site, because everyone will ask you about it when you return home. So see the Parthenon, with its 46 Doric columns, and marvel. When night falls, the Acropolis is best viewed from below, painted gold by floodlights and recorded by myriad clicking cameras.
The Acropolis is not Athens' highest point, though. That honour goes to Mount Lycabettus, with its tiny church and restaurant perched more than 900ft above the city bustle. Close by is the Lycabettus Theatre, carved into the rocks, and it's a venue that has hosted artists from Placebo and Nick Cave to Ray Charles and Bob Dylan. If 900ft is too far to climb, grab a ticket for the funicular railway that goes up Mount Lycabettus from Kolonaki.
A toast to the city
Of course, not everyone who seeks out one of our Athens holiday deals is interested purely in centuries-old culture. The city, to coin a cliché, buzzes with nightlife, and new bars continue to open, despite the recession that has plagued the country. For some rooftop cocktail action, try A for Athens, atop a small hotel by the Monastiraki metro station. It has fabulous views of the Acropolis and gets very busy.
For some old-school charm, head for Brettos, in the old Pláka district. Try some of the home-made liqueurs, gaze upon pretty rows of coloured bottles and marvel that such loveliness has lasted since 1909.
