Lisbon to-do list
As you would expect from the capital city of a country as diverse as Portugal, there is no shortage of things to see and do in Lisbon. Stay in one of our handpicked hotels and take your own time to discover the city. The city itself, a draw for tourists on a short luxury city break, can be a challenge to fully explore without a few free days and some comfortable shoes. There’s no real centre to Lisbon, but one of the most popular areas is the cosmopolitan Praça do Comércio – explore this central area or perhaps start your Lisbon adventure in the main square, Baxia, or venture to Rossio.
Lap up Lisbon’s cultural delights
Any visitor to Lisbon should make a point of climbing the Cristo Rei, the famous statue of Christ which offers some of the most photogenic views across the city. If climbing isn’t on your to-do list, you can still feast on some views to die for from the Castelo de São Jorge. Head over to the western side of the city and there’s even more culture, with the Belem Tower and Cultural Centre, not to be missed if you want to see famous artworks by the likes of Dali, Picasso, Warhol and Magritte.
Lisbon is the only European capital that can offer sandy beaches as part of its scenery, so the city really is the perfect city break location. Relax on a sandy beach – a sheltered cove can be the ideal place for a snooze, and the miles of coastline complete with sand dunes are as clean as they are beautiful. The longest stretches of coast are to the south of the city, as far along as Costa da Caparica, and for secluded charm head towards Adraga, which is rated as one of the best beaches in Europe.
