Romantic Florence city breaks
Table of contents
If Italian is the language of love, in Florence they speak it fluently. This beautiful Italian city is one of the most romantic of settings; a small, intimate city that encourages companionship at every turn in the footsteps of the original Romantics. We have handpicked a selection of offers for you to make the most of romantic weekends in this stunning city.
A city to stroll in
Being a small, compact city, Florence is perfect for a romantic city break – there is plenty to see and do without being overwhelmed or distracted by too much on offer. The city is absolutely perfect for that romantic stroll, hand in hand along the Arno river – particularly beautiful at sunset. Wander across the Ponte Vecchio which crosses the river, a pretty bridge enclosed by boutique shops on either side, and enjoy a little window shopping as you cross. Take a stroll through characteristic Italian neighbourhoods including San Frediano and Santo Spirito and pause when you reach the Piazzale Michelangelo (named after the city’s most famous resident, artist Michelangelo, painter of the Sistine Chapel and sculptor of David), where you can enjoy breathtaking views across Florence. If you are feeling energetic you can also climb to the top of the Cathedral dome or the Tower of Arnolfo on Palazzo Vecchio and enjoy panoramic views of the city.
The artistic city
Even if you are not an art lover, you cannot fail to be enchanted and inspired by the beautiful works on display in Florence, and you should make time to visit one of the collections. The Uffizi Gallery is home to the big names, and you should allow several hours just for the most famous pieces! If that seems daunting, both the Accademia and the Bargello are smaller but still have fantastic collections. The architrecture too is inspiring - the dome of the ‘duomo’, or cathedral is a famous silhouette on the skyline - but take time to enjoy the buildings around the squares and terraces too.
Time to relax
As well as enjoying a lovely hotel from our carefully chosen selection, there are plenty of ways to relax and enjoy time together on romantic getaways. If you enjoy a spot of shopping then the designer and luxury boutiques on Via Roma and Via Tournabuoni will be a delight. If your taste is more towards the artisan bent then make sure you visit the workshops in the Oltrarno district, where you can purchase beautiful souvenirs of your weekend. Of course coffee is one of the nation’s favourite obsessions, and there are plenty of café and restaurants where you can enjoy an espresso and watch the world go by. Similarly you should take the time to enjoy an aperitivo, or pre-dinner drink in this most romatic of Italian cities.
