Rome

Rome, a timeless metropolis, boasts a history that stretches over 28 centuries, blending ancient ruins with Renaissance grandeur and contemporary elegance. Steeped in history, the city is an architectural masterpiece - explore its iconic landmarks, from the imposing Colosseum to the baroque splendour of the Trevi Fountain, all the way to the high-fashion boutiques of Via dei Condotti.

Must-sees:

  • The Roman Forum & Colosseum: Begin your exploration at the heart of ancient Rome. Walk through the Roman Forum to the mighty Colosseum, where gladiators once battled in front of roaring crowds. These historic ruins will transport you back in time to the Roman Empire’s heyday.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica & Vatican City: Overlooking the city, St. Peter's Basilica is one of the most grandiose churches in the world. In the neighbouring Vatican Museums, art lovers can admire Renaissance masterpieces, including the iconic Sistine Chapel ceiling by Michelangelo. Vatican City itself is a unique, independent state, a hub of spirituality and history.
  • Trevi Fountain & Via dei Condotti: Toss a coin into the legendary Trevi Fountain, ensuring your return to Rome, before heading to Via dei Condotti for a luxury shopping experience. Here, international designer stores meet the charm of Roman architecture, offering a true taste of the city’s fashionable side.
  • Pincio Gardens & Piazza del Popolo: For stunning panoramic views, take a leisurely stroll up to the Pincio Gardens, where you can enjoy a romantic sunset over Piazza del Popolo and the distant St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

Culinary Culture:

Rome’s food scene is a celebration of Italy’s culinary traditions. Start your day like a local with a strong espresso at a traditional café, or indulge in pizza al taglio, the Roman-style square pizza sold by the slice. For a heartier meal, don’t miss cacio e pepe, a simple yet delicious pasta dish, or supplì, crispy rice balls stuffed with cheese and tomato sauce. For dessert, enjoy a gelato or a slice of torta della nonna (grandmother’s cake) in one of the city’s charming piazzas.

Dive Deeper:

Rome is a city where every corner reveals a piece of history, and art and culture are never far away. Visit the Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering, and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four papal basilicas. Explore the vibrant neighbourhood of Trastevere for a taste of authentic Roman life, or relax in one of Rome’s peaceful gardens, like the Orange Garden on Aventine Hill.

Good to Know:

Rome is an easy city to navigate, with most major attractions within walking distance of each other. The city’s metro and bus systems are also convenient for longer distances. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for cobblestone streets. The local currency is the euro, and tipping is appreciated, though not obligatory.

Florence

Known as the "birthplace of the Renaissance," Florence is a city steeped in art, history, and culture. As the UNESCO-listed capital of Tuscany, this stunning Italian city is home to an astonishing array of landmarks that tell the stories of the Renaissance, making it an essential destination for art lovers, history buffs, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in Italy’s rich heritage. From Michelangelo's masterpieces to world-class museums, Florence offers an unforgettable experience at every corner.

Must-sees:

  • The Duomo: The iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, topped with Brunelleschi’s magnificent dome, offers breathtaking views of the city from its summit.
  • Uffizi Gallery: Home to the world's most important collection of Renaissance art, including works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo.
  • Ponte Vecchio: A medieval bridge that spans the Arno River, lined with jewellery shops and offering picturesque views of Florence.
  • Piazza della Signoria: The central square of Florence, home to the impressive Palazzo Vecchio and the Loggia dei Lanzi, where sculptures like the Perseus with the Head of Medusa stand proudly.
  • Basilica of Santa Croce: A stunning Gothic church and the final resting place of some of Italy’s most famous figures, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli.

Culinary culture:

Florence is a food lover’s paradise, where rustic Italian flavours shine in simple, yet exceptional dishes. Try a classic bistecca alla Fiorentina, a juicy T-bone steak traditionally served rare. For a quick snack, lampredotto, a sandwich made from slow-cooked beef, is a Florentine street food specialty. Be sure to visit the Mercato Centrale to sample local produce and artisanal products. For dessert, indulge in cantucci (almond biscuits) dipped in vin santo, a sweet dessert wine.

Dive deeper:

Beyond the main attractions, Florence offers plenty of hidden gems for those looking to dive deeper into its history. Visit the Bargello Museum to admire Renaissance sculpture, or explore the Boboli Gardens behind the Pitti Palace for a peaceful retreat amidst lush greenery and spectacular views of the city. For something truly unique, visit Museo Leonardo da Vinci to discover the inventions and masterpieces of the great artist. Explore the Oltrarno district for artisanal workshops, offering a glimpse into Florence’s traditional crafts.

Good to know:

Florence is a walkable city, and strolling through its cobbled streets is one of the best ways to soak in the atmosphere. The local currency is the Euro (€), and the city is known for its excellent gelato – don’t miss a visit to Gelateria La Carraia for a sweet treat. Florence is particularly busy in summer, so visiting in the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) offers a more relaxed experience, with fewer crowds and more pleasant temperatures. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for exploring the city’s narrow streets and hilly terrain.
