Holidays to the Netherlands
Immerse yourself in Europe's most cosmopolitan capital
The only place to begin when exploring the Netherlands is Amsterdam. The city has enough wonderful art galleries and museums to occupy any holidaymaker for days, foremost being the world-famous Rijksmuseum which has a stunning collection ranging from Rembrandts to sculptures by Joan Miró. The more historically-minded traveller could then visit Anne Frank's house or the truly moving Jewish Historical Museum, which is just around the corner from a pair of spectacular synagogues.
Amsterdam has more to it than just museums though, and if relaxing in a gorgeous city park has more appeal, a trip to the celebrated Vondelpark in the heart of the city might fit the bill. It's a city worth losing yourself in, with famous canals (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and beguiling 17th century streets aplenty. That's not to mention the hip Jordaan district, full of delightful coffee shops and cool bars, or the notorious historic Red Light District, which has been a mecca for the more hedonistic traveller for centuries.
Escape the crowds and visit the Netherlands' lesser-known gems
Of course, the Netherlands is a nation of contrasts, and away from the capital, the cities of Rotterdam and The Hague offer less intense pleasures. Trendy Rotterdam is a port city with a difference: clubs and bars proliferate among the city's unique architecture (a response to extensive damage inflicted during the second world war), while Rotterdam attracts all manner of festivals and exhibitions. Also, not to be outdone by Amsterdam, the city has its own fair share of show-stopping galleries and museums well worth visiting during a Dutch holiday.
The Hague, as the Netherlands' administrative capital, is a city less about the bright lights and more about intellectual curiosity. Home to the International Criminal Court, it is perhaps one of the most important cities in recent political history, yet just miles away is a chilled beachfront. This city is international in every sense of the word, and a wide range of fantastic restaurants reflect this modern and inclusive atmosphere.
Get off the beaten track away from the big cities
Urban delights might abound in the Netherlands, but rural surprises are around every corner. Active travellers will adore cycling around the rolling countryside of this lowland nation; the IJsselmeer route which spans the entire country takes in numerous seaside and lakeside wonders, and even a dramatic nature reserve or two - perfect for an astonishing ride! If that wasn't enough, the rolling beaches of the Dutch coast could be the perfect finale to a trip to this most striking of countries.
