We encourage you to recall the adventures of this noble knight, starting:
Day 1: Alcalá de Henares
The Cervantes Route begins in the historic university town of Alcalá de Henares in Madrid. Located about 20km from the airport and declared a World Heritage Site, this spot is famous for its romantic atmosphere and for being the birth place of Miguel de Cervantes. Visit the main street, the Cervantes Theatre with its Corral de Comedias, the Plaza de Cervantes and the Casa Museo de Cervantes of the Spanish Golden Age.
You could also visit the University, the Cathedral of the Holy Children, the Archbishop's Palace, the San Ildefonso Residence Hall or the monumental route of the walls. Bed and breakfast in Alcalá de Henares: Hotel Evenia Alcalá Boutique 3 * or similar.
After driving approximately 1 hour, entering the beautiful landscapes of Toledanos, you arrive at Esquivias, a town that saw the birth of Catalina de Palacios, the wife of Cervantes, married in 1584. Visit cuevabodega of the Casa Museo de Cervantes, the parish church where the link is located. You will arrive in 30 minutes to Toledo, a World Heritage City by UNESCO. This walled city is where Cervantes justifies the creation of his work. And, as related in his novel, was in the old neighborhood of the Alcaná Toledo, where Cervantes narrated the adventures of Don Quixote. Toledo can be enjoyed from many points of view: architectural, cultural, artistic and gastronomic. Bed and breakfast in Toledo: Hotel Alfonso VI 4* or similar.
Day 3: Toledo to Tomelloso:
After exploring unique treasures, such as the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes and the El Greco Museum, you can visit the Casa Museo de Dulcinea and taste delicious sweets, handmade by the nuns in the Convento de las Clarisas. Enjoy the incredible landscapes characterised by its plains, named Land of the Giants by Cervantes. Be sure to visit Torreón and the church of Santa María, the vineyards, cereal and olive groves and Tomelloso - popular for its 4,000 wine storage caves. Bed and Breakfast at Hotel Altora 3* or similar.
After leaving Tomelloso, you will enter beautiful landscapes full of wine and gastronomic delights. Passing through Villanueva de los Infantes, it is impossible not to taste the ratatouille, the gazpacho from La Mancha or the white beans with partridge. You will arrive at Argamasilla De Alba where you can visit the cave / dungeon, where Miguel de Cervantes was imprisoned. It was precisely in the cave of Medrano where it is said that Cervantes began to write his masterly work. Discover the cave of Montesinos and the ruins of the Castle of Rochafrida, two key places in the adventures and misadventures of the Hidalgo. In Villanueva de los Infantes discover the house of Don Diego de Miranda and the Natural Park of Lagunas de Ruidera, one of the most beautiful in Spain. Bed and Breakfast at Hotel Vista Alegre 3* or similar.
Travel from Calatrava, full of castles, to Almagro. In Almagro you will visit the historic centre and its Corral de Comedias, the only theatrical stage of the Golden Age that is still preserved in the world. Do not miss The Plaza Mayor, the historic centre and the Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park (the most valuable natural spaces in Spain). Discover the famous "maares", inns and places inspired by the adventures of Don Quixote. In Ciudad Real do not forget to enjoy and savour the great cuisine! Bed and breakfast at Hotel Sercotel Guadiana 4* or similar.
Day 6: Ciudad Real to Alcalá de Henares
This first chapter of the Don Quixote route ends in Puerto Lápice, just 40km from Argamasilla. You can taste the best of the gastronomy of La Mancha: porridge, migas, duels and quebrantos (scrambled eggs with chorizo and pork bacon), asadillo, pisto, atascaburras (cod with mashed potatoes). Then follow the route to Cerro Calderico, in Consuegra. Here we finish this chapter, returning to Alcala de Henares. Bed and breakfast at Hotel Evenia Alcalá Boutique 3* or similar.
