Your Itinerary In Detail

Day 1 - 3

Day 1: Arrival in Sigiriya (15 km / 2 to 3 hours)

Upon arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will complete immigration formalities and collect your luggage. An airport representative holding a recognizable sign will greet you in the arrivals hall. Here, you'll meet your guide, who will accompany you throughout your journey from day 1 to day 6.

You will then be transferred to your hotel in a private vehicle. Once you arrive, you'll settle into your accommodations and have time to relax.

Overnight stay at the hotel in Sigiriya.

Day 2: Sigiriya

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, prepare for an exciting visit to Mount Ritigala, accompanied by your driver guide.

Ritigala, a mountain in central Sri Lanka, is home to an ancient Buddhist monastery. The ruins and rock inscriptions date back to the 1st century BC. Located 43 kilometers from the historic monastic town of Anuradhapura, Ritigala stands taller than other prominent attractions in the central and northern plains, such as Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Mihintale. Its significance lies in its steep verticality, forested slopes, and the humid microclimate at the summit. Ritigala is a remarkable cultural and eco-tourism site, with seventy rock caves believed to have been inhabited since the 1st century BC.

The main trail takes about an hour and a half to complete, but keep an eye out for smaller side paths leading to hospices, intriguing rock formations, and diverse wildlife.

If you're interested in a jeep safari in Minneriya, inform your driver-guide and pay a supplement. He will arrange the safari, which lasts approximately three hours. Be ready at the national park entrance by 2:30 PM.

Alternatively, you can return to the hotel to relax after lunch.

Overnight stay at the hotel in Sigiriya.

Day 3: Sigiriya

After breakfast, consider exploring Medirigiriya Watadageya and the ancient town of Polonnaruwa (optional, additional cost).

Medirigiriya Watadageya is a historic structure from the Polonnaruwa kingdom. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Parakramabahu I to house the Buddha's tooth relic, or during Nissanka Malla's reign to enshrine the Buddha's alms bowl. Polonnaruwa, a prime attraction in Sri Lanka, offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval times. The ruins of this archaeological park span approximately four kilometers from north to south.

In this area, you can visit the Sacred Quadrilateral, the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu, Rankot Vihara, and Gal Vihara. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can also visit Sigiriya (Lion Rock), an ancient rock fortress and ruined palace in central Dambulla. Surrounded by an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures, Sigiriya is famous for its ancient frescoes, reminiscent of the Ajanta caves in India. It is one of seven World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka and has been declared the 8th wonder of the world by UNESCO. The climb to the top takes around 2 to 3 hours.

Overnight stay at the hotel in Sigiriya.

Day 4 & 5

Day 4: Sigiriya to Kandy

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and head towards Kandy.

On the way, you'll visit the Ayurvedic village of Matale. Historically, Sri Lanka, known as Taprobane, was renowned for its high-quality spices. Note that while spices are available for purchase on-site, there is no obligation to buy. Only purchase if you wish and feel free to politely decline if not.

Next, visit Nalanda Gedige, an ancient stone temple near Matale. Thought to be the geographical center of Sri Lanka, this temple was constructed between the 8th and 10th centuries. Nalanda Gedige is modeled on a Hindu temple with a mandapa, an entrance hall, a short passage to a bare cell, and a gallery around the sacred center. This Buddhist temple, featuring intriguing Tantric Buddhist sculptures, combines Hindu architectural styles with Buddhist motifs. Located one kilometer east of the A9 road, 20 km north of Aluvihare, Nalanda Gedige is a serene spot halfway between Kandy and Dambulla and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overnight stay in Kandy.

Day 5: Kandy (150 km / 4-5 hours)

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a day trip to Nuwara Eliya.

Nuwara Eliya Misty Mountains Tour: Enjoy a scenic drive through misty mountains blanketed with tea bushes. Stop at a tea plantation where tea is picked, engage with the tea pluckers, and capture some memorable photos. Afterwards, visit a tea factory to see how pure Ceylon tea is processed.

Ambuluwawa Tower: Ambuluwawa Temple offers a unique experience with breathtaking views from its remarkable tower. Visitors should exercise caution, as the climb to the top can be challenging due to low railings, narrow stairs, and potential crowds. The summit of Ambuluwawa Mountain is 3,567 meters above sea level, and the tower itself rises 54 meters from its base to the top of the spiral.

Visit a Tea Plantation and Factory: Sri Lanka is renowned for its world-famous Ceylon tea, celebrated for its fine, rich flavor and brilliant golden color. This tour provides insight into the art of growing and producing this beloved beverage, including the opportunity to pick your own tea.

Overnight stay in Kandy.

Day 6 - 8

Day 6: Colombo (via Kandy)

After breakfast at the hotel, visit the Udawattekele protected area with your driver-guide.

Walk in the Udawattekele Forest: Located in Kandy's intermediate climatic zone, the Udawattekele forest features a rich variety of species from both wet and dry zones. Studies have identified around 400 plant species here, including ferns, grasses, and orchids.

After exploring Udawattekele, you'll depart the hotel and drive to Colombo.

Colombo City Tour: Colombo, Sri Lanka's largest city, is located on the west coast and is a melting pot of cultures and religions. Early traders and settlers left a unique blend of influences. During your city tour, you can visit the Gangaramaya Temple, the historic Wolfendhal Church, the Colombo Museum (if open and weather permitting), and other notable sights.

Note: Expect heavy traffic in the streets of Colombo.

Overnight stay in Colombo.

Day 7: Negombo

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and drive to Negombo for a day of relaxation.

Your Destination

Sri Lanka

With 8 Unesco World Heritage Sites to be found on such a small area of land and a 2,000 year old culture, Sri Lanka is as fascinating as it is beautiful. A destination that is often skipped by many a traveller on their trips to India or Asia, Sri Lanka remains one of the Indo-Asian best kept secrets. Visit its ancient sites and marvel over its legendary temples, or see the sacred home of the world’s oldest living tree, Anuradhapura.

Take a tour in one of Sri Lanka’s national parks to encounter elephants, leopards, water buffaloes, and exotic birds, or spend the day relaxing on the dazzlingly white, often untrodden, beaches. Try your hand at a little surfing or retreat up into the Sri Lankan hills to experience a more temperate climate and the lavish greenery of the tea plantations. In addition, you can even trek through the rainforests with an experienced guide or just take in the breathtaking vistas on a spectacular train ride. With fabulously flavoursome food and a vast array of culturally rich experiences to delve into, Sri Lanka promises to be one of your best-loved travel destinations, where the charm of the people will simply enchant you.

Maldives

Widely famed as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, the Maldives attracts travellers looking for true peace and quiet. Of the 2,000 islands that make up the country, only 200 are inhabited, making them a hotspot for luxury resorts with beautiful villas overlooking the azure Indian Ocean.

Its capital city, Malé, is a densely populated island at the heart of the country’s 26 atolls, though most visitors will spend their time on one of the country’s resort islands. Here, you can experience true relaxation, waking up to tranquil sea views and spending your days on the soft, white-sand beaches or diving in stunning reefs. Indeed, the Maldives have an amazing diversity of sea life, with corals and over 2000 species of fish, ranging from reef fish and reef sharks to moray eels, rays and whale sharks.
