Trogir —
Set on a small island along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, Trogir is a beautifully preserved medieval town recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Often described as an open-air museum, this enchanting destination is a maze of narrow stone streets, Romanesque and Renaissance architecture, and sunlit squares that reflect more than two millennia of history. Encircled by ancient walls and connected to the mainland by bridges, Trogir offers a timeless atmosphere where every corner reveals another architectural treasure.
Must-sees:
- St. Lawrence Cathedral (Katedrala sv. Lovre): A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture with an impressive carved portal by Master Radovan.
- Benedictine Monastery of St. Nicholas: Home to precious artworks, including the famous Kairos relief.
- Kamerlengo Fortress: A historic Venetian fortress offering panoramic views over the old town and coastline.
- Trogir Waterfront (Riva): A scenic promenade lined with palm trees, cafés and moored yachts.
- Čiovo Island: A nearby island connected by bridge, ideal for beaches and quiet coves.
Culinary culture:
The flavours of Trogir reflect the rich culinary heritage of Dalmatia. Enjoy grilled fish, octopus salad, black risotto and dishes prepared with local olive oil and aromatic herbs. Traditional konobas serve hearty regional recipes, while waterfront restaurants pair fresh seafood with crisp Croatian white wines, especially those from nearby Kaštela and Hvar.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its historic centre, Trogir invites leisurely exploration. Wander through hidden courtyards and artisan shops, take a boat trip to secluded bays, or explore the nearby islands by kayak or sailing excursion. Music festivals, open-air markets and cultural events bring the town to life throughout the summer, while the gentle pace and sunlit stone architecture make it a charming destination year-round.
Good to know:
Trogir is located about 10 minutes from Split Airport, making it one of the most accessible historic towns on the Dalmatian coast. The best time to visit is from May to October, when warm weather enhances sightseeing and island excursions. The local currency is the euro (€).
