Over the white-washed walls and orange terracotta rooves is the impressive Moorish Alcazaba. This massive fortress dates back to the 10th century and holds gardens and a colourful city quarter. For a dose of history during the Spanish Civil War, the Almeria air raid shelters are now a museum and the longest underground galleries in Europe. This region is adored for its beaches, which host an array of water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, and diving all within a stone’s throw from your hotel. The Spanish say that when Almeria was in its heyday, ‘Granada was but its farm.’ Just two hours away, the hills of Granada wait with Alhambra at its peak.
