Granada —
Granada, nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, enchants with its blend of Moorish heritage, Andalusian charm and vibrant street life. With winding alleys, lively squares and centuries of history, this city is where Islamic art, Spanish tradition and a youthful energy converge.
Must-sees:
- Alhambra: The city’s crown jewel, this palace and fortress complex is an extraordinary example of Nasrid art, with intricately carved arches, serene courtyards and breathtaking views over Granada.
- Generalife Gardens: Once the summer residence of the Nasrid sultans, these gardens captivate with flowing fountains, fragrant flowerbeds and shaded walkways.
- Albaicín Quarter: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this historic district invites you to wander its narrow cobbled streets and admire whitewashed houses with views of the Alhambra.
- Granada Cathedral: A Renaissance masterpiece with a grand façade and richly decorated chapels.
- Mirador de San Nicolás: The city’s most famous viewpoint, offering a spectacular panorama of the Alhambra framed by the Sierra Nevada peaks.
Culinary culture:
Granada’s tapas tradition is a joyful culinary ritual. A small tapa often accompanies your drink at no extra cost. For an authentic experience, try La Telefónica, renowned for its generous plates and lively atmosphere, or La Auténtica Carmela, celebrated for its Andalusian flavours with a modern twist. Pair your bites with a glass of local vermú and don’t leave without tasting piononos, a sweet speciality from nearby Santa Fe.
Dive deeper:
Stroll through the Sacromonte district, famed for its cave houses and flamenco performances. Escape into the nearby Sierra Nevada National Park for hiking and skiing, or discover the picturesque villages of the Alpujarras, dotted along mountain slopes. The city also brims with youthful energy, thanks to its large student population, giving nightlife and cultural events a vibrant, modern edge.
Good to know:
Granada is about 90 minutes from Málaga Airport, with regular buses and trains connecting the two cities. The best time to visit is during the summer months, when the city is full of life, festivals and warm evenings on lively terraces. Within Granada, most sights are walkable, though buses and taxis help navigate its hilly streets. Tickets for the Alhambra are limited and sell out quickly, so booking well in advance is essential.
