Gran Canaria —
Gran Canaria is often referred to as a ‘miniature continent’ thanks to its dramatically varied terrain, ranging from the green and leafy north to the mountainous interior and desert-like southern coast. Offering 197 km of beautiful coastline, many visitors come to explore the stunning beaches of resorts such as Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, while further inland there is ample opportunity for hiking the Caminos Reales (royal pathways).
On the south coast of the island, the striking Maspalomas Dunes draw travellers from all over the world, intent on seeing a dramatic desert landscape where you can try out camel rides. Further down the coast, Puerto de Mogan is a picturesque fishing village filled with bright, pastel-coloured houses and a golden, sandy beach. Confident travellers might also take the drive to Güigüi Beach, a secluded stretch of sand that's overlooked by dramatic cliffs and is only accessible via a long hike.
Alternatively, visitors may choose to experience incredible island views from Roque Nublo, a natural crag standing 1,813 metres above sea level which was an ancient place of worship for the original inhabitants of the island.
