Cordoba —
Córdoba, in the heart of Andalusia, is a city where cultures, flavours and centuries of history intertwine. Once the capital of Islamic Spain, it remains a masterpiece of Moorish architecture, with winding lanes, whitewashed patios filled with flowers, and the golden light of southern Spain reflected in every stone.
Must-sees:
- The Mezquita-Catedral: Córdoba’s breathtaking mosque-cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site blending Islamic geometry with Christian grandeur.
- The Judería (Jewish Quarter): A maze of narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and hidden courtyards rich with history.
- Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos: A former royal palace with lush gardens, fountains and panoramic towers overlooking the city.
- Medina Azahara: The ruins of a 10th-century palatial city just outside Córdoba, once the splendour of Al-Andalus.
Culinary culture:
Córdoba’s cuisine reflects its Andalusian soul-rich, simple and full of flavour. Try salmorejo, a creamy chilled tomato soup topped with jamón ibérico and egg, or flamenquín, a rolled pork dish that’s both hearty and local. Pair your meal with Montilla-Moriles wine and finish with pastel cordobés, a puff pastry filled with quince jam and almonds.
Dive deeper:
Explore Córdoba’s famous Patios, courtyards bursting with flowers, especially during the May festival when doors open to the public. Visit the Roman Bridge and the Calahorra Tower at sunset for views across the Guadalquivir River. Art lovers can discover contemporary Andalusian creativity in local galleries, while evening flamenco performances capture the city’s passionate spirit.
Good to know:
Córdoba is about 45 minutes from Seville by high-speed train and two hours from Madrid. The best time to visit is in spring (April to June), when the patios are in bloom and the city hosts vibrant festivals. The local currency is the euro (EUR).
