Andalusia

A land of contrasts, Andalusia embodies Spain’s diverse heritage, where Moorish influences meet medieval grandeur. From the intricate palaces of Granada to the sun-drenched patios of Seville, this region offers a rich tapestry of architecture, traditions, and landscapes. Beyond its famed cities, Andalusia reveals lesser-known treasures—whitewashed villages clinging to cliffs, vast wetlands teeming with wildlife, and remote sierras steeped in history.

Must-sees:

  • Úbeda and Baeza – Twin UNESCO-listed Renaissance towns, showcasing grand plazas, elegant palaces, and a refined architectural legacy.
  • Doñana National Park – A biodiverse haven of marshes and shifting dunes, home to the elusive Iberian lynx and thousands of migratory birds.
  • Setenil de las Bodegas – A striking village where houses are built directly into the overhanging cliffs, creating a surreal fusion of nature and architecture.

Culinary culture:

Andalusian cuisine is a reflection of its varied past, blending Moorish spices with Mediterranean flavours. Beyond the classic tapas and gazpacho, indulge in ajo blanco, a chilled almond and garlic soup, or choto al ajillo, tender kid goat cooked with garlic and sherry. The region’s sherry wines, produced in the historic triangle of Jerez, Sanlúcar, and El Puerto de Santa María, offer an unparalleled taste of Andalusian heritage.

Dive deeper:

Step beyond the grand cities to uncover Andalusia’s hidden narratives. Wander the abandoned mining town of Río Tinto, where rust-red landscapes evoke another planet, or explore the mysterious Dolmens of Antequera, prehistoric megalithic tombs aligned with the solstices. Flamenco is more than performance here—seek out an intimate peña for an authentic, impassioned experience of this deeply rooted art form.

Good to know:

The ideal time to visit is spring or autumn, when mild temperatures enhance exploration. Andalusia’s regional ferries connect the coast to Morocco, offering a seamless gateway between continents. Festivals shape the local calendar, from Seville’s Feria de Abril, a week of Andalusian pageantry, to the dramatic Romería de El Rocío, a spiritual pilgrimage attracting thousands each May.
