Itinerary
You will be picked up from your hotel and leave Fes to journey to the Rif Mountains and to one of Morocco’s most unique destinations, Chefchaouen (or Chaouen as it is called locally). After 1-hour drive, stop in a nice café restaurant in Ouazzane city for a refreshment.
The city of Ouezzane lies to the north of Fez. It is a sprawling town at the southern border of the Rif Mountains. It is also known as “Dar Dmana”. It is considered as a holy city by the Jews of Morocco as well the Islamic world. It is a spiritual capital as it is home to the big poles of Sufism.Your drive will continue through the Rif Maountains before arriving to the beautiful town, nestled between the two mountains, Jebel Ech Chaouen (the Horned Mountain), that plays a thousand tricks in the sunlight. The bright splashes of its freshly painted blue & white walls, fine grills and hidden vents cast delightful shadows, while cool, vaulted passages echo with the sound of trickling water.
The second panoramic stop on top of the Chouen Hill to view the houses that crowd together in the maze of alleyways at the top of the medina, overlooking the town & valley, have typically Moroccan studded doors, carved cornices, porches & wrought-iron balconies. Start a walking tour from the lower part of this city through whitewashed houses, painted in a blueish mauve (originally used by the Andalusians to keep the houses cool & ward off insects).
Visit the Kasbah Chaouen and free time for lunch (included). Several cafes terraces around the main plaza are providing very tasty local dishes. After lunch departure for the Ras Elma spring, passing by oil and watermills. Carry on to the wonderful lower waterfall and a much taller upper waterfall in the valley of Chaouen before returning to the hotel in the afternoon.
