Port Louis
The capital city and main port of Mauritius. The main tourist attractions include the Caudan Waterfront, Port Louis Bazaar, the Police Barracks, Chinatown and the old Port Louis Theatre. The old Post Office near the Caudan Waterfront is another attraction, while a number of French and English colonial buildings reside along the seafront and city centre enhancing the charm of this harbour city.

Ile aux Cerfs
Known in English as Deer Island, Ile aux Cerfs is famous for its sandy beaches, beautiful lagoon and wide selection of activities such as snorkelling and boating. The island is small and the only method of access is by ferry from Trou d'Eau Douce or by speedboat. The ocean here is very shallow, and it is possible to walk 100 metres or more into the sea, making this a very safe place to swim and enjoy water activities. There are no longer any deer on the island, yet still remains very picturesque.

Cap Malheureux and Coin de Mire
The pretty red-roofed Roman Catholic church has made the fishing village of Cap Malheureux, one of the most recognised destinations in Mauritius. The name of the village in English is Cape Unlucky, because of the shipwrecks that occurred offshore during the colonial period. This is a historic spot, as the British troops landed here in 1810 on their way to Port Louis, where they seized control of the island. Coin de Mire, also known as Gunner's Quoin, is a tiny island with the remnants of a sugar plantation set up by Dutch settlers a few kilometres offshore.

Domaine de l'Etoile
Paul and Virginie was made into a film in 1972, with the movie being shot on Mauritius and much of the action taking place at Domaine de l'Etoile. A wooden cabin with a huge veranda was part of the set, and can be visited today as the centrepiece of a nature park rich in flora and fauna. Hiking, mountain biking, quad biking and horse riding are amongst the activities here, and there are still plantations where people use sickle and wicker baskets to harvest and transport the sugar cane. Special tours can be arranged to the battleground where the British and French fought in 1810.

Grand Bassin
Grand Bassin is a crater lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius, and is considered the most sacred Hindu place on the island. There is a temple here dedicated to Lord Shiva and other gods including Hanuman and Lakshmi, and during Shivaratri, many pilgrims walk barefoot from their homes to the lake. The 108-foot tall image of Shiva is a faithful copy of the Shiva statue at Sursagar Lake in Vadodara, India. The lake area is also home to a number of other activities such as trekking, hiking, walking and rock climbing.

Black River Gorges National Park
This beautiful national park is located in the hilly south-western part of Mauritius and was founded in 1994. The terrain includes humid upland forest, drier lowland forest and marshy heathland. Facilities for visitors include two information centres, picnic areas and 60 kilometres of trails. There are four field stations in the park that are used for research. The park protects most of the island's remaining rainforest. Amongst the wildlife are the Mauritian flying fox, and indigenous breeds of birds such as the kestrel, pink pigeon, parakeet, cuckoo-shrike, bulbul and the Mauritius olive white-eye.
