Kaafu Atoll —
At the centre of the Maldives’ island chain, Kaafu Atoll (home to North Malé, South Malé, and the smaller Gaafaru Atoll) is the country’s vibrant core, where luxury, local life, and world-class diving coexist in perfect harmony. Just a short speedboat ride from Malé, it’s the most accessible atoll, yet still offers countless pockets of pristine tranquillity.
Must-sees / Must-do:
- Sandbank escapes: Glide across turquoise waters to untouched sandbanks where you can swim, snorkel, or simply bask in pure solitude.
- Banana Reef: One of the Maldives’ oldest and most famous dive sites, featuring dramatic overhangs, soft corals, and schools of bannerfish.
- Vadoo Channel: A spectacular drift dive for experienced divers, teeming with grey reef sharks and eagle rays.
Culinary culture:
Kaafu Atoll’s dining scene blends the Maldives’ coastal flavours with global sophistication. Savour mas huni (tuna with coconut and chilli) at a local café, or dine underwater at high-end restaurants surrounded by marine life. Fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and coconut-infused dishes dominate every menu, from beach grills to fine-dining resorts.
Dive deeper:
Experience island-hopping by speedboat, explore coral reefs alive with colour, or indulge in spa rituals over the lagoon. Surf the famous waves of Chickens or Jailbreaks, then toast the sunset from an overwater bar as the sky ignites in gold and crimson.
Good to know:
Kaafu Atoll is easily reached by speedboat from Malé International Airport, making it ideal for short stays or a first Maldives experience. Despite its accessibility, many of its private islands remain blissfully secluded, offering the best of both worlds: vibrant energy and serene escape.
