Your Destination

The Crown at Hopton is the ideal base from which to enjoy glorious countryside. They are situated in Cleobury Mortimer — pronounced Clibbery — whose name derives from the great Norman family of Mortimer established here in 1086.

John Betjeman once described this South Shropshire town as 'a long airy curving street of brick Georgian houses and shops interspersed with genuine half-timber, the Rea brook making a splash at the bottom of the hill,' and it is clear through strolling through this quaint market town that a certain English charm, often lost in other parts of the country, has been preserved.

Places of interest in Shropshire include:

Historic market town with a wealth of black and white Tudor buildings, a weekly market and an 11th century castle. 20 minutes by car.

Stokesay Castle
The oldest surviving fortified manor house in England. 30 minutes by car.

A World Heritage Site and the valley that changed the world. Less than hour by car.

The ancient market town sits high on a sandstone cliff with spectacular views of the Severn Valley.

Much Wenlock
A quintessentially English town, off the beaten track and the birthplace of William Penny Brookes, founding father of the Modern Olympic Games!
Church Stretton
Church Stretton's picturesque setting in a narrow valley through the South Shropshire hills earned it the name of "Little Switzerland".

Craven Arms
A modern Town where the name originates from the 17th century Craven Arms Inn and it was the creation of a major railway junction that stimulated growth of the settlement in Victorian times.

Bishops Castle
The small market town of Bishop's Castle is located in South Shropshire, close to the Welsh Border.

Severn Valley Railway
16 miles of glorious countryside. More than just a train ride and a great day out for all of the family.
