Almost the entire park is covered with tall, reedy Pohon grass, which grows all year round. Udawalawe is a superb place to watch elephants as an estimated 450 elephants live here.

One Day Sinharaja Rainforest (minimum two people)

Optional excursions

Sinharaja presents the characteristic features of a tropical rainforest. Sinharaja Rainforest, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the last remaining rainforest in Sri Lanka and is home to most (almost 95%) of Sri Lanka’s endemic birdlife, giant butterflies and more than 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic mammals. A most amazing sighting at Sinharaja is the dazzling colours and shocking contrasts as the large mixed flocks of feeding birds’ flit through the forest. This lowland forest is considered to be one of the best birding sites in Sri Lanka with 22 out of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds having been sighted here, and large mixed feeding flocks providing an unusual spectacle.

Practical Information:

Please note: this is leech country and therefore all clients are provided with leech-proof socks ideal for forest trekking through the undergrowth. Due to the dense forest mammal life can be more difficult to spot; of the 40 species listed you would have a good chance of seeing Giant Squirrels, Mongoose, Purple-Faced Langur, Wild Boar and Barking Deer. Rarer species include Rusty-Spotted cats, Fishing Cats, Indian Civet Cats, Porcupine and Leopard. Sightings of leopard are only occasional, though proof of their presence is easier to find, there have also been unconfirmed reports of a 'Panther' or black leopard in the jungle.

Your itinerary in brief

Key highlights include visiting a tea plantation and factory, exploring the city of Kandy by tuk-tuk, uncovering ancient fortresses, monuments and villages, admiring the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple and spending a day in Sri Lanka’s largest city, Colombo.

Day 1: Sigiriya
Day 2: Sigiriya
Day 3: Kandy
Day 4: Hatton
Day 5: Colombo
Day 6: Departure

Your itinerary in detail

Day 1 - 3

Day 1: Sigiriya

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. After completing immigration formalities, you can collect your luggage. You will find an airport representative at the arrivals level waiting for you with a sign and helping you to find a transfer vehicle.
You'll then be driven straight to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy.

Overnight stay at the hotel in Sigiriya

Day 2: Sigiriya

Tuck into a tasty breakfast at the hotel, then depart for your tour. Enjoy a scenic catamaran ride, a relaxing guided trip with beautiful natural scenery and wildlife. You will be able to discover and walk around a traditional village and admire the local vegetable crops. Afterwards, you'll have the unique experience of observing and participating in the domestic life of village members in a traditional house.

Optional: Jeep safari to Eco Park/Mineriya/Kaudulla National Park

Overnight stay at the hotel in Sigiriya

Day 3: Kandy

After breakfast, check-out from the hotel and drive to Kandy. Today you'll visit Sigiriya (Lion Rock), a large ancient stone and rock fortress, but also a ruined palace in the centre of Dambulla, Sri Lanka, surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, water reservoirs and other structures. This popular tourist destination is also known for its ancient paintings (frescoes) reminiscent of the Ajanta caves in India. It is one of Sri Lanka's seven World Heritage Sites. It has also been declared the eighth wonder of the world by UNESCO.

Note: If you want to climb to the top, it will take you about 2-3 hours.

En route visit the Ayurvedic village of Matale. In early history, Sri Lanka, known as Taprobane, was world famous for its unique and high quality spices (please note: the spices can be purchased locally, but you don't have to buy them).

Afterwards, experience a tuk-tuk tour of the city of Kandy. Nestled in green hills, criss-crossed by the Mahaweli River and with the beautiful Kandy Lake as its centrepiece, Kandy is certainly the most picturesque city on the island and the most visited. It still retains much of its charm and ancient traditions, handicrafts and typical Sri Lankan way of life. After sightseeing, meet your guide. Visit the centre for batik and wood carving. Get an insight into the local handicraft and art or gemstones.

Note: The tour takes about 1-2 hours.

Overnight stay at hotel in Kandy

Day 4 - 5

Day 4: Hatton

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel again this morning before heading off to Hatton. You'll visit The Temple of the Tooth which is a monumental architectural heritage not only of Kandy but of the whole of Sri Lanka. The tooth relic was brought to Kandy by King Wimaladharmasuriya-I who took it out of Delgamuwa at Sabaragamuwa.

Note: We recommend that you wear modest clothing when visiting the temple. Flowers for offering can be purchased along the way to the temple. Proper attire is mandatory for the visit. You may take your camera; shoes must be removed at the temple entrance and safe storage facilities are available.

Next up on the itinerary - the tea plantation and factory. Here, you'll get to experience tea picking for yourself. Sri Lanka is home to the world's finest Ceylon tea, which is world renowned. With its fine, rich flavour and brilliant golden colour, it is unsurpassed in quality. The tour will give you an insight into the true art of growing and producing this must-have drink.

Overnight stay at hotel in Hatton

Day 5: Colombo

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and transfer to Colombo. Embark on a tour of the largest city in Sri Lanka. It is located on the west coast and brings together all cultures and religions, having been the first stop for early traders and settlers in the country.
