Your Itinerary In Detail —
Day 1: Cancun
Upon arrival at the airport, you will be given all the directions needed to find and join the Xplorer representative, who will take you to your hotel. Arrivals are usually in the late afternoon or early evening, so you'll enjoy the first night of your stay in Cancún. Tomorrow, the driver will pick you up and transfer you to the car rental office.
Overnight stay at Adhara Hacienda.
DAY 2: CANCÚN - AKUMAL - BACALAR
This morning, leave for Akumal Bay to go swimming with the turtles that can be found in this crystal clear sea all throughout the year. You will also have the possibility to swim in the Yalku lagoon, located nearby, where seawater and fresh water unite.
Continue to Bacalar. Famous for its seven-coloured lagoon, Bacalar is considered the pearl of the Caribbean. This small town is known for its history and natural resources. Take a walk in the centre of town and visit the San Felipe Fort, built in 1729.
Overnight stay at Rancho Encantado.
Day 3: Bacalar
You will have some more time to enjoy Bacalar's lagoon. This special lagoon is made up of seven different cenotes, which give it its name, and is about 42 km long and 2 km wide.
Bacalar was an important commercial crossroads for the Mayan people. Much of the trade between Central America and the Yucatán peninsula occurred here.
Overnight stay at Rancho Encantado.
DAY 4: BACALAR - COBA - PUNTA LAGUNA - MERIDA
Depart this morning for Coba. Arriving at the archaeological site, you can rent bicycles to move around more easily.
You'll reach the main and highest pyramid of the region, from where you'll enjoy an exceptional view of the jungle.
Then, you will continue to the Punta Laguna nature reserve, where you can take a walk in the Yucatán jungle and with a bit of luck come across spider or howler monkeys. Kayak on the lagoon or explore a cenote accompanied by a local guide. Then it's onto Merida, capital of the Yucatán.
Overnight stay at Hacienda Merida.
Day 5: Uxmal - Cenotes and Haciendas
After breakfast, head to Uxmal, a major site of the 'Ruta Puuc.' Marvel at the incredible monuments showcasing typical architecture such as the nuns' quadrilateral or the governor's palace.
In the afternoon, swim in one of the local cenotes. The more adventurous can enjoy the surrounding villages and haciendas during a bike ride through the jungle. Return to Merida at the end of the day and visit an old hacienda in Yaxcopoil that made the area very wealthy.
Suggested extra: for lunch, go for an authentic meal at a local's house. Ride a bicycle and go from cenote to cenote.
Overnight stay at the hotel Hacienda Merida.
DAY 6: MERIDA - IZAMAL - CENOTE - CHICHEN ITZA
This morning, head to Izamal, a charming colonial '"magic village', and visit the Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, whose atrium is second in size only to that of the Vatican. You can also climb the Kinich Pyramid for a great view of this city.
Afterwards, head to the Yokdzonot cenote for a refreshing swim in its clear waters. A relaxing afternoon is guaranteed! At the end of the day, you will go to Chichen Itza where a sound and light show will await you, if you wish, at nightfall.*
*Please note that the light show at Chichen Itza is temporarily closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Overnight stay at the hotel Hacienda Chichen.
Day 7: Chichen Itza - Cenotes - Valladolid
This morning, depart early for the marvellous site of Chichen Itza, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and considered one of the 'new wonders of the world' since 2007. Soak up the beauty of this site and the echo of its past glory.
In the afternoon, relax and swim as you discover several of the most breathtaking cenotes in this region! Discover two in Dzitnup (X'keken and Samulah), entirely enclosed in caves, and the semi-open cenote Zací, in the heart of the historic centre of Valladolid.
Head to Valladolid, a charming little town. From here you can visit the Zocalo and its white cathedral. Lose yourself in the colonial streets of the city centre, passing by the municipal bazaar and the San Bernardin convent.
Overnight at the Posada San Juan hotel.
DAY 8: VALLADOLID - PLAYA DEL CARMEN
This morning, after breakfast, continue your route to Playa del Carmen for your seaside stay. Your vehicle must be returned to the car rental agency by 1pm, and a transfer will wait for you to drive you to the hotel.
