South Malé Atoll —
South Malé Atoll, just a short speedboat ride from the capital, offers a more peaceful, unspoilt atmosphere than its northern counterpart, while still giving you effortless access to Malé’s transport hub. Known for its dramatic channels, world-class dive sites, and intimate resort islands, it’s the perfect choice for travellers seeking tranquillity without long transfers.
Must-sees / Must-do:
- Dive Kandooma Thila, one of the Maldives’ most legendary sites, famed for grey reef sharks, eagle rays, swirling jackfish and vibrant soft corals.
- Snorkel Cocoa Thila House Reef, prized for turtles, reef sharks and crystal-clear visibility.
- Take a sunset cruise along the atoll’s quieter southern rim, where dolphins frequently dance in the wake of passing boats.
Culinary culture:
South Malé blends resort elegance with authentic island flavours. Expect fresh tuna grilled over coconut husk, fragrant curries, and local snacks like bis keemiya served in relaxed beach cafés on Maafushi and Gulhi. Resorts elevate the experience with seafood barbecues, sandbank dinners and fine dining under the stars.
Dive deeper:
What sets South Malé apart is its series of deep channels (kandus) that funnel rich currents, creating some of the Maldives’ most thrilling drift dives. These nutrient flows bring sharks, rays and pelagic species remarkably close, ideal for experienced divers. At the same time, the atoll retains a calmer, more secluded feel than North Malé, with fewer inhabited islands and a stronger emphasis on boutique, tranquil resorts.
Good to know:
South Malé Atoll is reached exclusively by speedboat, making transfers fast and scenic, no seaplane needed. It’s an ideal choice for travellers seeking big marine encounters, easy access, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from the bustle of the capital.
