Male —
The Maldives, an archipelago of 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, is synonymous with tranquil beauty and exclusive escapes. With only 200 of its 2,000 islands inhabited, this destination blends natural splendour with refined luxury. Whether you seek serene beaches, underwater marvels, or cultural discoveries, the Maldives offers a journey to remember.
Must-sees:
- Malé: Dive into the bustling capital, home to landmarks like the 17th-century Old Friday Mosque, the Maldives National Museum, and vibrant fish markets.
- Hanifaru Bay: Visit this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a haven for snorkelling with manta rays and whale sharks during the season.
- Vaadhoo Island: Witness the mesmerising "Sea of Stars," a natural phenomenon where bioluminescent plankton light up the shoreline at night.
Culinary culture:
Maldivian cuisine celebrates the ocean’s bounty, featuring fresh tuna, reef fish, and lobster. Staples like mas huni, a breakfast dish of tuna, coconut, and onion served with flatbread, showcase local flavours. Try garudhiya, a fragrant fish soup, or savour spicy curries paired with rice. Many resorts offer traditional Maldivian nights, complete with authentic dishes and cultural performances.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its luxurious resorts, the Maldives has a rich heritage waiting to be explored. Take a dhoni boat ride to a local island and observe traditional crafts like mat-weaving or lacquer work. Explore underwater caves, wrecks, and over 1,000 coral reefs in one of the world’s best diving destinations
Good to know:
The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US dollars are widely accepted. The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate with peak tourist season from November to April. Travel between islands is ideally made by seaplane or speedboat, offering breathtaking views of the atolls below. Modest attire is recommended in Malé and on local islands, reflecting the country's Islamic culture.
