Seenu Atoll —
Seenu Atoll is unlike any other atoll in the Maldives. Located at the very southern tip of the archipelago, it boasts a heart-shaped formation, a unique chain of inhabited islands connected by causeways, and a fascinating blend of British colonial history, lush tropical scenery, and thriving marine life. Far from the busier northern atolls, Addu offers an atmosphere that feels both authentically Maldivian and wonderfully untouristed.
Must-sees / Must-do:
- Cycle across the causeway linking the islands of Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo — one of the rare places in the Maldives where you can explore multiple islands by road.
- Snorkel the Addu Manta Point, home to year-round manta encounters thanks to consistently nutrient-rich waters.
- Dive the British Loyalty wreck, a WWII-era tanker resting at 33 metres — the Maldives’ most historically significant and accessible shipwreck.
- Visit Gan Island, once home to a major British Royal Air Force base, where remnants like bunkers and old buildings still stand.
- Discover Koagannu Cemetery, one of the oldest Islamic burial sites in the Maldives.
Culinary culture:
Addu’s cuisine is known for its distinct flavours, particularly Addu bondi (a sweet coconut delicacy) and spicy fish dishes enriched with local chilli varieties. Try freshly baked masroshi or grilled tuna seasoned with curry leaves and served alongside tropical fruit chutneys. Local cafés offer an authentic, laid-back dining experience that differs from resort-style dining in other atolls.
Dive deeper:
The atoll’s southern equatorial location creates a unique marine environment with deeper channels, larger pelagic species, and coral formations differing from the central Maldives. Its culture also stands apart, with strong historical ties to its RAF past and a more urban feel in Hithadhoo, one of the largest towns in the archipelago.
Good to know:
Reach Addu via a domestic flight from Malé to Gan International Airport, the only southern international gateway. This is the ideal atoll for travellers seeking authentic culture, rich history, unparalleled accessibility between islands, and exceptional diving with year-round mantas.
