Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll —
Set in the far south of the Maldives, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll (South Huvadhoo Atoll) is one of the country’s most breathtaking and least-explored regions, a true sanctuary of pristine reefs, sapphire lagoons and deep tranquillity. Renowned for its outstanding snorkelling, it boasts one of the Maldives’ finest house reefs, where vibrant corals and abundant marine life lie just steps from the shore.
Must-sees / Must-do:
- Snorkel the atoll’s legendary house reefs, where you can spot reef sharks, turtles, and rays gliding through crystal-clear waters.
- Dive at Fiyoaree Corner or Konotta Reef, known for spectacular visibility and thriving coral gardens.
- Explore Gadhdhoo Island, famed for its traditional thundu kunaa mats handwoven by local artisans.
- Take a sunset dolphin cruise, gliding across the calm turquoise lagoon as pods of spinner dolphins leap in the fading light.
- Unwind on Konotta Island, an exclusive hideaway ideal for honeymooners and those seeking absolute privacy.
Culinary culture:
Experience flavours drawn straight from the ocean, grilled reef fish marinated with chilli and lime, coconut curries rich in spice, and tropical fruits bursting with sweetness. Many resorts offer private beach dining, allowing guests to savour Maldivian cuisine under a canopy of stars.
Dive deeper:
Gaafu Dhaalu’s remoteness means its reefs remain among the healthiest in the Maldives, offering a raw, untouched marine paradise. Its cultural heart beats in the small local islands, where life moves to the rhythm of the sea, and traditions are still deeply rooted.
Good to know:
Reach Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll via a domestic flight from Malé International Airport to Kaadedhdhoo, followed by a scenic speedboat transfer. Fewer visitors venture this far, making it the perfect spot for those seeking unspoilt beauty, world-class snorkelling, and serene seclusion.
