Your Destination —
But this working port is also the gateway to the spectacular central east coast of Sardinia, which has some of the island's most idyllic beaches.
North of the town, a long stretch of sand joins Arbatax to the coast near the town of Lotzorai; here, the uninhabited, blood-red island known as L'Isolotto stands a short boat-hop from the beach.
The technicolour fondali (underwater reefs) make the island a favourite with snorkellers, and keen ornithologists are drawn by the migratory birdlife. Iron rings driven into the island's rocks are reminders that this tiny outcrop was a vital haven for fishermen fleeing from furious winter storms: nowadays, local boat-owners will be happy to ferry you out there for a small fee.
Farther north, in the middle of the Golfo di Orosei nature reserve, is the Grotta del Bue Marino, Sardinia's answer to the Blue Grotto.
Monk seals used to come to this natural wonder, a series of stalactite and stalagmite-filled caves, to pup. A regular boat service from the port at Arbatax (times change, but it's usually about 8.30am daily) makes stops at various spots along the northern coast and continues to the grotto.
The beaches in the little bay between Punto Frailis and the San Gemiliano promontory are beautiful - the latter topped by a Spanish watch tower. Farther south, the Lido di Orrì is a series of white-sand indentations set against fragrant Mediterranean scrubland and thick pine woods, the sapphire waters punctuated by dramatic, sea-sculpted needles of porphyry.
