Arbatax —
Set on the rugged east coast of Sardinia, Arbatax is a striking seaside destination where dramatic landscapes meet the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. Known for its wild beauty and authentic atmosphere, this former fishing port lies at the gateway to the Ogliastra region — one of the island’s most unspoilt and captivating areas. Here, red porphyry cliffs plunge into turquoise seas, secluded coves replace crowded beaches, and nature reigns supreme. Arbatax offers a slower, more intimate Sardinian experience, ideal for travellers seeking tranquillity, scenery and raw coastal charm.
Must-sees:
- Rocce Rosse: Arbatax’s iconic red rock formations, glowing spectacularly at sunset against the blue sea.
- Porto di Arbatax: A small harbour where fishing boats and ferries coexist, offering views across the coastline.
- Cala Moresca: A scenic bay surrounded by cliffs, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
- Gennargentu Mountains: A dramatic inland range ideal for hiking and discovering Sardinia’s wild heart.
- Golfo di Orosei: Accessible by boat, home to some of the island’s most beautiful beaches and caves.
Culinary culture:
The cuisine around Arbatax reflects the soul of eastern Sardinia, combining sea and mountain traditions. Enjoy freshly caught fish, seafood pasta and grilled octopus along the coast, while inland dishes feature slow-cooked meats, pecorino cheese and handmade culurgiones or Ogliastra’s famous stuffed pasta. Local Cannonau wine, produced in the surrounding hills, pairs beautifully with the region’s robust flavours and completes an authentic Sardinian dining experience.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its coastline, Arbatax invites exploration into one of Italy’s most untouched regions. Take a boat trip along the Golfo di Orosei to discover hidden coves such as Cala Goloritzé and Cala Luna, or venture inland to remote villages where ancient traditions, shepherd culture and local festivals endure. Hiking trails, canyoning routes and panoramic viewpoints reveal landscapes shaped by time and isolation. Whether by sea or by mountain path, Arbatax rewards curiosity with unforgettable natural beauty.
Good to know:
Arbatax is located about 2 hours from Cagliari Airport by car and is also reachable via the scenic Trenino Verde railway from inland Sardinia. The best time to visit is from May to October, when warm weather and calm seas are ideal for coastal exploration. The local currency is the euro (€).
