Your Destination —
Sleepy by nature, Loggos is a tranquil retreat with four tavernas, a bakery and a mini market. Close by, after a short stroll through the olive trees, you will stumble across the excellent beaches (Levrechio, Marmari, Kipos and Glyfada) all with white pebbles and clear as crystal aqua blue water. Inland you will find the village of Magazia, a village with tavernas and a mini market set amongst the deepest of olive groves at the crossroads of all the inland lanes that wind round the island.
Paxos has avoided all forms of mass tourism, and whilst Gaios, the capital and to a lesser extent the smaller villages of Lakka and Loggos, buzz with a cosmopolitan mix of yachtsmen and day visitors from Corfu, very few people stray further afield. Even in the middle of August, one can wander along any of the hundreds of paths and rarely meet a soul.
Gaios, with its excellent choice of shops, mini markets and tavernas is 5 minutes’ away by car or a leisurely 20 minute stroll leads to the nearest taverna and the sheltered beach at Mongonissi, joined to the “mainland” by a causeway.
The main beach at Mongonissi is lovely for kids, sandy and very gently shelving into the bay. Forming a beautiful and very sheltered inlet, the bay of Mongonissi is popular with yachts who have always found shelter here from wind and weather. The swimming is superb with clean clear water shelves gently making it ideal for children and inexperienced swimmers. If you fancy somewhere different to top up that tan, these nearby rocks are ideal for a change of scene.
Make use of your car hire and explore the local area, be sure to visit a chapel, called Agios Spiridon. From here you can enjoy spectacular views south towards Anti Paxos and east towards the Greek mainland. Or perhaps venture further out on a boat taxi. There is a regular boat taxi service from Gaios which can take you to Anti Paxos with its shining white sandy beach and crystal clear water, or Loggos and Lakka.
