Finland offers a huge variety of activities for guests no matter the season. Embark on some traditional winter excursions such as snowmobile rides and reindeer safaris and fall in love with this region's spectacular lakes, cosy bonfires and indulgent saunas.

Saariselkä is located in the Far North of Finnish Lapland, so is particularly suitable for the sighting of the Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon that often occurs at these latitudes. The Northern Lights season lasts until April, after this the days become longer and temperatures rise until midnight sun in summer. Snow starts to melts and landscape starts to change to spring/green.

It's a gateway to the Urho Kekkonen National Park so is surrounded by amazing snow-covered scenery to explore. Saariselkä is an authentic area where nearly 200 Sami herders live. Snow generally arrives around the end of November here making it the best time to visit the area.

From the top of the mountain overlooking the resort, on clear days, you can see all the Lapland up to the border with Norway in the north and with Russia in the East: a breathtaking view of endless snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, wide plains and sublime mountains.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort 4* —

You will enjoy a 1-night stay in a Small Glass Igloo and a 2 or 3-night stay in an Small Log Cabin, on a Half Board basis (Breakfast and dinner either buffet or 3-courses - excludes drinks).

This arctic resort is the ideal space from which to spot the Northern Lights and also take in the charm of the frosty surroundings and natural highlights.

The resort is located 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and is just a 30 minute drive from Ivalo Airport. The ideal location puts guests on the edge of the wilderness and a just a short distance from Urho Kekkonen National Park. Breathe in the fresh Finnish air and drink from some of the purest rivers. Enjoy delicious cuisine in the two lovely restaurants and make sure to take some time to yourself in the smoke saunas.

Glass Igloo
Our members will be treated to one night of their stay in an enchanting Glass Igloo which offers fabulous views of the starry sky and the Northern Lights! This accommodation is truly unique and provides guests with a chance to get up close to nature from the comfort and privacy of their own space.

Small Glass Igloos have 2 single beds with a small toilet and a wash basin inside. Saunas and showers are available in separate buildings. Please note: all Glass Igloos have single beds, unless requested to join them together.

Small Log Cabin
For 2 or 3 nights (depending on chosen package) our members will be accommodated in charming log cabin chalets made out of large kelo pines that create a rugged style that fits perfectly with its surroundings. Enjoy a cosy, calming space where you can get back to nature and spend some time relaxing in these quaint areas. The cabins feature a fireplace and a sauna providing even further relaxation.

Your Board Basis —

The resort boasts two indulgent restaurants with a la carte menus and traditional Lappish dishes. The Kelo restaurant is traditional and rustic and the West Village Aurora restaurant features its famous glass igloo bar where guests can enjoy a tasty drink and wind down in the evenings. There is also the Santa Celebration House restaurant, Korsu 'Underground' restaurant or the smoke sauna restaurant available to book for larger groups.

Your Time —

There is plenty to do during your time here in Finland with wonderful excursions and opportunities available to guests. Situated just by the river are the hotel's three smoke saunas, one of which is the largest smoke sauna in the world! Each of these saunas also has a dressing room with a fireplace for ultimate comfort during your time here. Head to the end of the jetty where a hole can be cut in the ice allowing guests to take the freezing plunge. Please note: it takes 6 to 10 hours to heat up these saunas so they are only available by special order.

As well as equpiment rental, the resort also offers guests a host of optional excursions to allow them to truly get the most out of their time in Finland. These include husky or reindeer safaris, snow tank safaris, ice fishing, cros-country skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, gold panning and much more depending on the season of your travel.

Optional Stopover in Helsinki —

You may choose to extend your trip by adding a 1-night stopover pre and post the Magical Finland tour at the Original Sokos Hotel Presidentti 4*. Here, guests will be accommodated in a Standard Room on a Bed and Breakfast Board Basis.

Aurora Hunting by Husky (Day 2)

An arctic night-time adventure with the huskies! The guide will pick guests up from Kakslauttanen and provide thermal outfits at the husky farm. Then it is time to meet the friendly dogs who are eagerly waiting in front of the sledges. Husky dogs love running and can’t wait to get going! The husky guide will give instructions on how to stop, turn and drive the husky sledge pulled by several dogs. To drive a husky team in dark is already itself an exciting experience. Head torch light on your head you drive the team further away from the glow of artificial lights to find the magical Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis.

The sled is for 2 people, unless you wish to have your own sled only for yourself (for extra cost). The other person is seated in the sleigh, the other is standing and driving in the back, you can swap drivers halfway. You will enjoy riding in the wintery forest as much as the dogs! After arriving at the farm and thanking your dogs for the adventure together it’s time for a hot drink and some husky stories.

Snowmobiling - 2 hours

A thrilling ride in the arctic forest. The best way to see the fell landscape in Lapland is by taking off

with a snowmobile. The guests are picked up from Kakslauttanen, taken to the activity location and provided with thermal outfits and instructions. The snowmobile is for two people where one is driving and other sits in the back, you can swap drivers halfway. There is also an option to have the snowmobile all for yourself and if you don’t wish to drive yourself, you can also ride in the back of a sleigh (for extra cost). You head into the wilderness with a bit of adrenaline and get immersed into the arctic nature. After the ride, we’ll have a cup of hot juice and a Finnish treat together before heading back to Kakslauttanen.

Age limit: Drivers need to be 18 years of age with a driving license. Children need to be min 130 cm

tall in order to sit on snowmobile. Kids shorter than this can sit in a sleigh pulled by guide’s

snowmobile, small children should be accompanied by adult. Note: You are not allowed to drive under the influence of alcohol, according to Finnish law. There’s a self-risk liability of 1200 € for renting the snowmobiles. Instructions will be given before the start of the activity. We cannot allow pregnant guests to join this activity.

Reindeer to Sami Village - 2 hours

The authentic way to experience the arctic wilderness and culture. The guide will pick up guests from Kakslauttanen and provide thermal outfits at the farm. After a photo opportunity with reindeer it’s time to sit comfortably in the sledge under warm blankets and head into the wilderness. The pace is calm and the guests can relax, breath in the fresh air and listen to the soundscape of the arctic wilderness. After the ride, enter a traditional reindeer herder’s shelter and home “kota” to enjoy coffee prepared on open fire and a Finnish treat. Guests will also learn about the fascinating nature and culture of the region.
