Memphis was the capital of ancient Egypt and an important centre of history. Situated approximately 24 km south of Cairo, it is home to the necropolises of Memphis, including Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser. This is considered to be the oldest pyramid in Egypt and represents a milestone in the history of architecture. The pyramid was designed by Imhotep, the first known architect in history. Located in southern Egypt, near Sudan, Abu Simbel is one of the greatest treasures of antiquity. Its monumental temples, carved into the rock in honour of Ramses II, bear witness to the architectural genius and beliefs of the time. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, the site is also famous for the remarkable feat of its relocation to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
