Cairo
Luxor
A captivating blend of timeless grandeur, vibrant culture and riverside charm, Luxor is a city where the past breathes through every stone. Once the heart of ancient Thebes, it invites travellers to wander among colossal temples, royal tombs and avenues of statues that echo with history. Along the Nile’s gentle banks, traditional feluccas drift by while bustling souks and lively streets reveal the city’s enduring spirit.
Must-sees:
- Valley of the Kings: Step into the resting place of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs, where richly decorated tombs reveal dazzling scenes of the afterlife, including the famous tomb of Tutankhamun.
- Karnak Temple: Spanning over 200 acres, Karnak is a vast realm of columns and carvings where centuries of devotion still echo in stone.
- Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple: Carved into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari, this striking terraced temple pays tribute to one of Egypt’s most remarkable rulers.
Culinary culture:
Luxor’s food scene blends Upper Egyptian traditions with timeless favourites. Savour tagine-style stews slow-cooked with tender meat and vegetables, or feteer meshaltet, a flaky layered pastry that can be sweet or savoury. Fresh Nile perch, often grilled and served with herbs, is a local highlight. Baladi bread remains a staple, best torn and dipped into tahini or spicy dips. To cool down, try sugarcane juice, pressed fresh on the street, or sip a chilled glass of karkadeh, the ruby-red hibiscus tea beloved across the south.
Dive deeper:
See Luxor from the water with a sunset felucca ride, where the golden light dances across the Nile and the West Bank hills. Wander through the quiet streets of the village of Gourna, where tradition and daily life unfold beside ancient tombs. For a glimpse of Egypt beyond the pharaohs, visit Luxor’s bustling souks, filled with spices, textiles and hand-crafted souvenirs. If time allows, take a short trip to the temples of Abydos and Dendera, two of the most beautiful but rarely explored sites in all of Egypt.
Good to know:
Luxor is best explored at a slower pace, with most sights divided between the East and West Banks of the Nile. Taxis and ferries make crossing easy, though many visitors also enjoy cycling through the quieter West Bank villages. The Egyptian pound (EGP) is the local currency, and cash is handy for souks and smaller cafés. Summers are extremely hot, so the cooler months from October to April are ideal for sightseeing.
Aswan
Set on the sun-drenched banks of the Nile River, Aswan is Egypt’s southernmost city and one of its most enchanting cultural destinations. Known for its serene atmosphere, golden الضوء landscapes and timeless river views, Aswan offers a more tranquil contrast to the country’s larger cities. Here, ancient monuments, Nubian heritage and the gentle rhythm of the Nile come together in a setting of remarkable beauty.
Must-sees:
- Temple of Philae: A stunning riverside temple dedicated to the goddess Isis.
- Abu Simbel: Monumental temples carved into rock, a masterpiece of ancient Egypt.
- Unfinished Obelisk: A fascinating insight into ancient stone-working techniques.
- Aswan High Dam: An impressive modern structure overlooking Lake Nasser.
- Aga Khan Mausoleum: A striking monument set against desert hills with panoramic views.
Culinary culture:
Aswan’s cuisine reflects Nubian and Egyptian influences, with simple, flavourful dishes made from fresh ingredients. Expect grilled meats, stews, flatbreads and spices, often enjoyed in relaxed settings overlooking the Nile.
Dive deeper:
Beyond its landmarks, Aswan invites a slower exploration of Egypt. Sail the Nile on a traditional felucca, visit colourful Nubian villages or watch the sunset over the riverbanks. The city’s calm and authenticity create a deeply immersive experience.
Good to know:
Aswan is served by Aswan International Airport, located about 25 minutes from the city centre. The best time to visit is from October to April, when temperatures are more comfortable. The local currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP).
