Your Destination —
For centuries, Nuremberg was the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire and a favourite residence of most German kings, who kept their crown jewels here. Rich and rife with architectural marvels, it was also a haven for many famous artists.
Despite terrible destruction during World War II, much of the city retains its medieval appearance, and when touring the forbidding Kaiserburg or exploring surviving lanes of half-timbered houses in the city’s Altstadt, which is still encircled by its medieval city walls, it’s easy to imagine how the Nuremberg of Albrecht Dürer, Veit Stoss or the Meistersingers might have looked. Not surprisingly the museums – from the intimate Albrecht-Dürer-Haus to the encyclopedic Germanisches Nationalmuseum – are compelling.
The Christmas Market —
As you wander from one rustic wooden stall to the next you will be greeted by traditional, often handcrafted Christmas decorations and irrestistably sweet treats such as roasted almonds and gingerbread - a Nuremburg Christmas special. During your visit sit back and watch your fellow Christmas shopper mill past as you sip at some warming Glühwein.

As with many other regions in Germany, there are many meat dishes in Bavarian cooking. Particularly loved are pork dishes. With the meat dishes are usually served a mixed salad and Klöße (potato dumplings), the classic Bavarian side dishes. Typical Bavarian cuisine is known for its traditional hearty dishes with regional specialities including classic meat and roast dishes with rich gravy and dumplings or sausages. The perfect accompaniment to a good Bavarian meal is a refreshing "Maß" of Bavarian beer.
Whereas elsewhere beer is seen as a drink of pleasure in Bavaria it is considered more as a basic food. It’s hardly surprising when you look at the statistics: on average a Bavarian consumes from birth to the grave some 150 litres of beer per year putting Bavarians right at the top of the beer consuming list of states in Germany. This particular area is also known as "Beer-Franconia" (Bierfranken) as the region has the highest density of breweries in all of Europe, over 400 - and that's just the small ones!
