Since its founding in 1790, Washington D.C. has been a very important American destination. This 68-square-mile federal district and home to a multitude of important government buildings, including the U.S. Capitol, the White House and the Supreme Court Building.
The city is also full of impressive landmarks including the Washington Monument, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the iconic Lincoln Memorial. Don't miss The National Mall - a picturesque two-mile stretch running from the US Capitol in the east, to the Lincoln Memorial in the west, featuring a multitude of important landmarks, including the Washington Monument and the Vietnam War Memorial. Contemplate the glittering reflecting pools, and if weather permits, relax on the lawn where many a groundbreaking political rally has taken place, and ponder the history all around.
Navigating DC (as it's affectionately named by locals) is made an easy task with the city's unique street naming system. The US capital is divided into four quadrants, with the Capitol building at its centre. Streets running north-south are numbered, while streets that run east-west are given a letter. Washington is renowned for its terrible traffic jams, but getting around by public transport couldn't be easier with Washington D.C.'s metro. Comprising six lines, it's the second-busiest rapid transit system in the country, behind NYC's subway.
What is tricky in this city, is deciding what to do. History buffs are sure to love the American History Museum or the Natural History Museum. Art lovers will surely swoon at the Renwick Gallery or the National Portrait Gallery. Many attractions in Washington D.C. are free, which is great for the holiday budget. Choose between 17 Smithsonian museums and galleries, and even the City Zoo! Other notable museums include the Air and Space Museum, the African Art Museum and the American Indian Museum.
Washington DC is also famous for its many vibrant neighbourhoods, the most famous of which must be Georgetown - which was featured on screen in the renowned series 'House of Cards'. Home to Georgetown University, this quaint neighbourhood in the northwest part of the city is known for its cobbled streets, brick houses, historic charm, gourmet restaurants and even, the Georgetown Cupcake!
Visit the beautiful Georgetown University Campus which accommodates approximately 20,000 students. Situated in close proximity to the picturesque Potomac River, it's a picture-perfect destination for a bucolic stroll, far from the hallowed halls and corridors where politics reigns. The Potomac River also provides a stunning backdrop to D.C's historic architecture. Hop aboard a boat cruise and float down the river while enjoying the iconic skyline.
Sports fans in Washington D.C. are positively spoiled for choice; basketball and hockey fans can catch the Wizards, the Mystics and the Capitals at the Capital One Arena, while baseball fans might enjoy sampling that inimitable 'ballgame experience' by taking in a fixture at Nationals Park.
Should your preference be for a gourmet outing, be sure to check out Maine Avenue Fish Market. Inaugurated in 1805, it's even older than New York's famous Fulton Fish Market. And if there is an 'R' in the month during your stay in Washington D.C., why not watch some delicious oysters being shucked and toast your trip to DC with a nice crisp glass of Chardonnay!
