Your Destination —
The Black Lion is a stones throw from Kentwell Hall. Melford Hall dominates the village green and is also very close to the Black Lion.
Coupled with the lovely shops and village atmosphere, Long Melford is a world away from the hectic hustle of everyday life and a wonderful destination to step back and relax over a traditional cream tea, a pint of ale or a hearty meal at The Black Lion.
Long Melford is a village with a lot to offer to the visitor, whether you are interested in historic buildings, antiques, life-style shopping, good food or the latest fashions. There are a number of excellent restaurants and a collection of shops that are the envy of East Anglia.
Long Melford is in the heart of the valley of the Stour river. The scenery is something special, and two hundred years ago John Constable thought so too, using scenes from the river in many of his famous paintings as did Gainsbourgh in nearby Sudbury.
The countryside is dotted with ancient villages, never more than a few miles apart surrounded by beautiful English countryside.
There are two lovely stately homes for guests to visit:
Kentwell, a romantic, moated Tudor mansion in a tranquil parkland setting. There are beautiful gardens, and historic farm buildings complete with rare breeds of animals.
An open-air theatre here is the setting for plays and concerts during July and August (pre booking is essential).
Melford Hall, the home of the Hyde Parker family, belongs to the National Trust and is open to the public. Opening days are: Easter week, weekends in April and October and then Wednesday to Sunday from May until the end of September. It is also open on Bank Holiday Mondays. There is an extensive events programme including walks and tours and special children's events, including the annual Beatrix Potter Fun Day in July.

The Black Lion’s award-winning restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, offering a substantial menu featuring many hearty favourites including Estate potted hare and partridge pate, wholemeal toast or Angus oxtail & kidney suet pudding, truffle oil mashed potatoes, roast chantey carrots, red wine sauce and Slow roasted shoulder of pork stuffed with bramley apple and sage, fondant potatoes, Aspall Suffolk cider sauce. A relaxed Sunday at the Black Lion has become a tradition for many customers, enjoying roast Rib of Beef with all of the trimmings.
Long Melford has antique emporiums, made famous by the filming of Lovejoy, craft shops and two of the finest stately homes and the beautiful 15th century Holy Trinity Church and is one of the most attractive villages in England.
