Your Destination —

The area that surrounds the Crown Inn at Stoke by Nayland - namely Dedham Vale -was where famed artist John Constable once lived, loved and painted. It is now lovingly named ‘Constable Country’ in honour of the man himself, who doted on the rustic charm of the verdant gardens, rolling landscapes, parish churches and timber-framed houses.

Stoke by Nayland itself is charming as can be – a village situated on a hill that overlooks the Stour and Box river valleys. Nearby is the 120-foot towering majesty of St Mary’s Church (where some of Constable’s paintings are kept) and not much else – just the way it should be. The area also boasts a typical village shop and the highest bookshop in Suffolk!

Places of interest nearby include beautiful villages such as Kersey and Lavenham, Long Melford for antiques, and the Suffolk Coastal towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold.

There's certainly no lack of character in Stoke by Nayland, an expansive, welcoming village that instantly makes me want to live there. Great views, a village hall, two schools, a well-stocked shop and two centuries-old pubs, the Angel and The Crown… what more could one want?
