Your Destination —
Considered the birthplace of thoroughbred horse racing, in the heart of Suffolk you will encounter Newmarket, one of the most famous draws to this enchanting area. The town itself is bustling and busy, with red-brick Georgian facades lining the high street.
Annually, Newmarket holds two of the five British Classic Races, plus countless racing days throughout the year. It has over 70 training yards, 80 stud farms, 70 miles of training gallops and at any-one-time there are around 2,000 thoroughbreds in training in Newmarket. It is hard not to be impressed, and in awe of the culture of racing, therefore a variety of horse racing activities and tours are available, to gain an insight into this historical tradition.
Visit the National Horseracing Museum or the Palace House: National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art to start your Horse Racing education. You may also want to explore the area while on this fabulous break, so head for Devil's Dyke, Cambridge or Stetchworth Park.
Not far from Newmarket, you will find the National Trust estate of Ickworth House, Park & Gardens, a neoclassical country house set in spectacular gardens. Stroll in one of England’s finest Italianate gardens and explore the intriguing Stumpery. See how one man’s passion led to the creation of this remarkable house and its renowned collection of treasures.
When you stay at The Jockey Club Rooms, you are minutes from the towns main sites and only a 5-minute car ride from the Racecourse itself.

The Jockey Club Rooms —
Halfway down the high street, hidden in a green oasis, this members-only club has been at the heart of British racing for over 250 years. Founded in the middle of the eighteenth century, The Jockey Club Rooms was initially a social club aiming to promote good fellowship among racing and thoroughbred breeding enthusiasts. Today, this racecourse gem has become 'the' exclusive place to stay, attaining an exclusive guestlist including Royalty, at least six former Prime Ministers and racing elite.
Exquisitely decorated, find fine antiques and a unique collection of British racing memorabilia including original paintings and photographs, perfectly poised for you to admire.
On the following morning, start your day with a breakfast in the Morning Room, where the large French doors open to the sun-laden terrace for you to take your tea. The club is adjacent to a training yard, so why not take a morning stroll through the perfectly manicured gardens, listening to the calm sounds of the horse's gallops?
Not just a place to stay but a fascinating insight into the “sport of kings”, this exclusive, town-centre venue is a private members club which offers luxurious accommodation and the chance to view first-class equine artwork in an elegant and historic setting.
