Don’t miss also Dolwyddelan Castle, one of their mountain strongholds overlooking the Lledr Valley, Penmaenmawr Museum for an insight into a Welsh industrial community and Tˆy Mawr Wybrnant, the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan, who first translated the Bible into Welsh. For something on a more artistic theme, explore the increasing number of interesting little galleries and art shops around the region, such as the Potter’s Gallery in Conwy, or the Bodnant Craft Centre.
Conwy Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage listed castle, built in the late 13th century. Today it competes with Snowdonia's rugged skyline and wins the battle for your attention! With 8 fabulous towers, each commanding breathtaking views across the estuary of the River Conwy and down into Conwy itself, a trip to this magnificent building is rewarding and memorable.
Anglesey. It really isn’t any wonder that over 220 square miles of Anglesey’s unspoilt coast and landscapes have been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Whether you want tranquil green space interspersed with a carpet of colourful flowers, or the unrivalled beauty of the towering cliffs, home to hundreds of nesting seabirds, Anglesey really does think of everyone!
The dramatic landscape of Snowdonia bears a striking resemblance with the backdrop used for the Lord of the Rings films starring Sir Ian McKellen, pictured playing Gandalf in the Fellowship of the Ring.
Like Wales' other national parks, this one is lived-in, with sizeable towns at Bala, Dolgellau, Harlech and Betws-y-Coed, and a population in excess of 26,000. Two-thirds of the park is privately owned, with more than three-quarters used for raising sheep and cattle.
