Your Road Trip —
Days 1 & 2
Day 1: Edinburgh - Glasgow
Arrive in Edinburgh, where you will be met in person and provided with everything you need for your road trip! Pick up your car hire from Edinburgh Airport and drive the short distance to Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, which boasts a cosmopolitan vitality and an exciting arts and culture vibe. In the afternoon you could visit some Outlander sites including Glasgow University, Glasgow Cathedral, Dowanhill Road and George Square.
Overnight at Kimpton - Blythswood Square Hotel 5* (or similar).
Day 2: Glasgow - Pitlochry
Following breakfast, it's time to explore some of the most recognizable Outlander sites.
First on the list is Doune Castle which plays a leading role in the show, substituting for the fictional Castle Leoch and home to Colum MacKenzie and his clan in the 18th century. Next stops are Tullibardine & Drummond Castle Gardens and Tibbermore Church, famous for its fantastic architecture and parks.
After visiting those places, you will travel to the Highland village of Pitlochry for an overnight stay.
Overnight at Atholl Palace Hotel 4* (or similar).
Day 3 & 4
Day 3: Pitlochry - Inverness
After breakfast, it's on to the Highland Folk Museum. Replicas of 18th century turf-roofed Highland crofts at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore made the ideal choice for period scenes in Outlander, depicting the rural villages under Castle Leoch's jurisdiction.
The drive continues to the Highland Capital, the City of Inverness.
Overnight at Glenmoriston Townhouse 4* (or similar).
Day 4: Inverness
Today you could visit Culloden, the location of the famous battlefield where the Jacobite uprising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie came to its tragic end—followed by a visit to Clava Cairns. These 2000-year-old stone circles are said to have inspired Diana Gabaldon to write Outlander.
You will then enjoy free time in Inverness to explore at your leisure.
Overnight at Glenmoriston Townhouse 4* (or similar).
Day 5, 6 & 7
Day 5: Inverness - Edinburgh
Following breakfast, you will travel south to Edinburgh. En route, you will drop in at the Falkland Palace and Culross. Historic Culross is a unique example of what a town in Scotland would have looked like during the 17th and 18th centuries. In Outlander, this charming town was used in the first season as the setting for Geillis' home. Falkland Palace is the place where some opening scenes of the TV Series were recorded (the 1940s in season 1 and 1960s in season 2).
Overnight at InterContinental Edinburgh The George 5* (or similar).
Day 6: Edinburgh
Today you will explore various Outlander sites near Edinburgh. First on our list is Hopetoun House, which provided the backdrop for a Parisian street and the spare room in Jamie and Claire's Parisian apartment for Outlander season 2. After the tour of this magnificent estate, you will go on to visit Midhope Castle and Blackness Castle, all featured in the filming of the series.
Overnight at InterContinental Edinburgh The George 5* (or similar).
Day 7: Edinburgh
Start today with a walk down The Royal Mile, which extends downhill to Holyrood Palace, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. You will have the opportunity to visit Holyrood Palace (optional with extra cost) if you wish, or you can use your free time to explore more of this fascinating city on your last day in Scotland.
Overnight at InterContinental Edinburgh The George 5* (or similar).
