Falmouth —
Set on Cornwall’s south coast, Falmouth is a lively harbour town known for its maritime heritage, sandy beaches, and creative atmosphere. With one of the world’s largest natural harbours, colourful waterfront streets, and easy access to some of Cornwall’s most beautiful coastline, Falmouth combines seaside relaxation with history, culture, and outdoor adventure.
Must-sees:
- Pendennis Castle: Explore this impressive coastal fortress built by Henry VIII, with sweeping views across the harbour and coastline.
- National Maritime Museum Cornwall: Discover Cornwall’s seafaring history through interactive exhibitions and historic vessels.
- Gyllyngvase Beach: One of the town’s most popular beaches, ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing by the sea.
Culinary culture:
Falmouth’s coastal location means fresh seafood features prominently on local menus. Enjoy dishes such as Cornish crab, mussels, and freshly caught fish, often served in waterside restaurants overlooking the harbour. Traditional Cornish pasties remain a local favourite, while cream teas with freshly baked scones offer a classic taste of Cornwall. The town is also home to independent cafés, artisan bakeries, and a growing collection of craft breweries.
Dive deeper:
Take a ferry across the estuary to the picturesque village of St Mawes, known for its sheltered harbour and coastal walks. Explore the subtropical gardens at Trebah Garden and Glendurgan Garden, where exotic plants thrive in Cornwall’s mild climate. For a scenic day out, follow part of the South West Coast Path, which offers dramatic sea views, hidden coves, and opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Good to know:
Falmouth is easily reached by train from the rest of Cornwall and serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding coastline. The summer months bring a lively atmosphere with sailing events, festivals, and outdoor activities, while spring and early autumn offer milder weather and quieter beaches. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Cornwall enjoys some of the warmest temperatures in the UK throughout the year.
