Best of British

Explore Bristol’s cultural scene and the highlights of the Welsh capital with a two-part stay.

Stroll along the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, and admire the feat of engineering that is Brunel's SS Great Britain.

Make sure to visit the harbourside for lively markets, and cool waterfront restaurants, with a backdrop of pretty painted houses. Renowned for its street art and alternative vibe, you’ll find funky galleries, hip espresso bars, and cosy local pubs jostling for space in Bristol's centre.

Continue on to Cardiff, where you can visit the historic castle, and gorgeous grounds of Bute Park. Look through vinyls in the boutique-packed Victorian and Edwardian arcades in the city centre, which are architectural gems in themselves.

Spend an afternoon at the vibrant waterfront Cardiff Bay, where old docklands have been fully renovated to create an entertainment hub with everything from upscale restaurants, to an ice-skating centre!

Your Destinations

Bristol

Bristol is full of fantastic attractions that make for a great day out, from Britain’s most acclaimed historic ship to its iconic suspension bridge, one of Europe’s leading interactive science centres and an outstanding network of free museums.

SS Great Britain - Step back in time when you board Brunel’s SS Great Britain. Discover the true stories behind the ship that changed the world. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of life on-board for Victorian passengers and crew. Descend underwater below the glass ‘sea’ to touch the world’s first great ocean liner.

Clifton Suspension Bridge - The world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge was designed by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, although he never lived to see his creation finished in 1864. Take in the views from its spectacular setting on the cliffs of the Avon Gorge.

Bristol Cathedral - this site has been home to a whole host of churches for over a thousand years but it came to prominence in 1140 when Robert Fitzharding founded the Abbey of St. Augustine. The original Chapter House and Abbey Gatehouse can still be seen. The structure of the eastern end of the Cathedral, especially in the Choir, exemplifies this period in British and European architecture. The Nave, Choir and Aisles are all the same height, creating a magnificent hall. Bristol Cathedral is the best known example of a 'Hall Church' in Great Britain and one of the finest anywhere in the world.

You'll also be close to Bath and Cardiff - so why not visit some of these local gems?

Cardiff

Cardiff, the capital of Wales since 1955, is known for its abundance of theatres, art galleries, sports and historical houses. See one of Europe's finest art collections and over 500 years of paintings, sculptures and drawings from all over the world as well as a magnificent collection of Impressionist Art at the National Museum Cardiff. At the St. Fagans National Museum of History, explore the story of Wales, see traditional crafts and workshops, all in a historical 16-century manor house that was donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth in 1948.

In the city centre, visit Cardiff Castle, showcasing more than 2,000 years of history and where you can climb the mighty Norman Keep, marvel at the Castle Apartments and experience the Firing Line military museum.

If you're a sports lover, you've come to the right place. The Millennium Stadium hosts a range of matches including the Speedway Grand Prix, rugby and football. The city is also home to the Cardiff International White Water, a raft and canoe course as well as the ice hockey team, the Cardiff Devils.

No matter your interest, Cardiff is a perfect city break to learn, explore and immerse yourself in the culture.
