St Lucia —
Saint Lucia, in the eastern Caribbean, is an island of dramatic peaks, lush rainforests and golden beaches washed by turquoise waters. Framed by the iconic Pitons rising steeply from the sea, it blends natural splendour with Creole charm, from fishing villages and botanical gardens to luxury resorts and coral reefs.
Must-sees:
- The Pitons: Gros Piton and Petit Piton, twin volcanic spires and a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering hiking trails and breathtaking views.
- Sulphur Springs: The Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano, where visitors can soak in mineral-rich mud baths and hot springs.
- Toraille Waterfall: A 15-metre cascade set in tropical gardens, perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Castries Market: The vibrant capital’s market, brimming with spices, crafts and local life.
Culinary culture:
Saint Lucian cuisine is a fusion of Caribbean, African and French influences. Sample green fig and saltfish, the island’s national dish, or enjoy freshly grilled seafood with local seasonings. Tropical fruits like mangoes and breadfruit feature widely, while rum punch remains the quintessential island drink.
Dive deeper:
Explore the island’s rainforest on canopy walks or zipline adventures, discovering exotic flora and birdlife. Snorkel or dive along the Anse Chastanet reef, alive with corals and colourful fish. For a cultural touch, seek out traditional fishing villages such as Soufrière, or visit Pigeon Island National Park, steeped in history and offering panoramic coastal views.
Good to know:
Saint Lucia is served by two airports: Hewanorra International in the south and George F. L. Charles near Castries. The best time to visit is during the dry season (December to April), when the weather is warm and sunny. The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD), though US dollars are widely accepted.
