Your Destination

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a lush, tropical island paradise, famously described by Marco Polo as "undoubtedly the finest island of its size in the world". This is a culturally rich and environmentally diverse country, with nine World Heritage Sites (the oldest dating back to the 3rd Century BC); 86 species of mammals (including elephant and leopard) and more than 400 bird species (including 26 endemics);

a colorful array of flowering plants and trees, and a Hill Country famous for tea; 14 National Parks out of 100 areas protected by the government; and an Indian Ocean coastline boasting palm-fringed and sandy tropical beaches.

Visit ancient sites and marvel over  legendary temples, or see the sacred home of the world’s oldest living tree, Anuradhapura. Take a safari tour in one of Sri Lanka’s national parks to encounter elephants, leopards, water buffaloes, and exotic birds, or spend the day relaxing on the dazzlingly white, often untrodden, beaches.

Try your hand at a little surfing or retreat up into the Sri Lankan hills to experience a more temperate climate and the lavish greenery of the tea plantations. And if you can even trek through the rainforests with an experienced guide or just take in the breathtaking vistas on a spectacular train ride.

With fabulously flavoursome food and a vast array of culturally rich experiences to delve into, Sri Lanka promises to be one of your best-loved travel destinations, and the charm of the people will simply enchant you.

  • CREDIT CARDS: MasterCard, Visa and American Express cards are accepted widely around the island at hotels, shops, restaurants and malls. However, many small outlets prefer cash and hence it is recommended to carry some cash.

  • ATTIRE: Comfortable cottons and flat footwear is best. Shorts, t-shirts, slippers are accepted. However, when visiting temples, clothes worn must cover shoulders and knees. Headwear and footwear must be removed before entering a temple. At hotels, casual attire at breakfast and lunch is accepted but at dinner guests are expected to be attired in smart casual attire. Use safety lockers if provided in rooms for your valuables, or lock them securely in your luggage. Don't leave valuables, including passports, lying around in your hotel room when you aren't there. When moving around in public, ensure your wallet is secure and ideally, divide your money in different holders to minimize risk if lost or stolen.

If you have any allergies, inform the restaurant before ordering. Avoid eating already pre-cut fruit in wayside kiosks; insist they are washed and cut in your presence.
  • WATER: Bottled water is recommended; it is easily available on your routes.
  • SAFETY: Keep a close watch over your children always; don't allow them to access balconies, lifts and get on / off vehicles on the tour without your close supervision.
  • TIPPING: Tips are not included in your program inclusions. Tipping is not compulsory, however it will be appreciated if given after you've received good service.

On the other hand, several items sold in Sri Lanka both to locals and tourists including gems and precious stones, spices, hand-carved wood, brass and iron items, batiks and fabrics have been created by local artisans for generations. Therefore, you can visit some venues which display the craft of fabricating these artefacts, with no obligation to shop. Such venues we recommend are licensed by the authorities to sell wares to tourists and locals.
