Your Destination

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a lush, tropical island paradise, known to ancient Greek mariners as Taprobane. Arab traders called it Serendib – hence the word "serendipity", meaning discovery by happy accident. It was famously described by Marco Polo as "undoubtedly the finest island of its size in the world". This is a culturally rich and environmentally diverse country, with 9 World Heritage Sites (the oldest dating back to the 3rd Century BC); 86 species of mammals (including elephant and leopard) and more than 400 bird species (including 26 endemics); a colorful array of flowering plants and trees, and a Hill Country famous for tea; 14 National Parks out of 100 areas protected by the government; and an Indian Ocean coastline boasting palm-fringed and sandy tropical beaches.

Day 3: Colombo / Pinnawala / Habarana
After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, head to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (Approx Travel Time from Colombo to Pinnawala - 02 to 02 ½ Hours drive). The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a home for young Elephants who have been displaced or lost from their natural habitat, located in Pinnawala village in the Sabaragamuwa province of Sri Lanka. The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is the best place for an up close and personal experience with the world’s largest land mammals! Today with 70 elephants herein, Pinnawela has become home to the largest captive group of elephants in the world. On completion, proceed to Minneriya National Park for an exciting wildlife safari! (Approx Travel time from Pinnawala to Minneriya: 2 1/2 hours - 3 hours drive).

Minneriya National Park is one of the best places in the country to see wild elephants, which are often present in huge numbers, and wading birds. Dominated by the ancient Minneriya Tank, the park has plenty of scrub, forest and wetlands in its 88.9 sq km to also provide shelter for toque macaques, sambar deer, buffalo, crocodiles and leopards (the latter are very rarely seen however). Elephants, which can number 200 or more, come to feed and bathe during what is known as ‘the Gathering’; and flocks of birds, such as little cormorants, painted storks, herons and large pelicans all fish in the shallow waters. On completion, return to the hotel and relax.

Overnight stay at the Habarana Village by Cinnamon, Oak ray Elephant Lake or Similar.
Day 4: Habarana / Sigiriya / Polonnaruwa / Habarana
After breakfast, leave for the Sigiriya Rock Fortress where you could climb the 1200 steps and admire the fabulous frescoes on the walls of the ancient rock fortress (Approx Travel time from Habarana to Sigiriya: 20 - 30 min drive). The Sigiriya Rock Fortress is known as the 8th wonder of the world. This rock fortress was built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century A.D. and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. In a sheltered pocket, approached by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes. The summit of the rock, with an area of nearly one hectare, was the site of the palace and the outer wall was built on the very brink of the precipice. The UNESCO sponsored Central Cultural Fund has restored Sigiriya 5th-century water gardens to their former glory.

After lunch, proceed to do a bicycle tour in Polonnaruwa (Approx Travel time from Habarana to Polonnaruwa: 1 1/2 - 02 hours drive). The tour gives you the wonderful opportunity to enjoy viewing the remnants of the ancient Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. Day 5: Habarana / Matale / Kandy / Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast at the hotel, check out and proceed to Kandy. En route make a visit to the Spice Garden in Matale (Approx Travel time from Habarana to Matale: 01to 01 ½ hrs drive). Matale is famous for its batik production and spice gardens. Batik has been an ancient art of painting cloth and today Sri Lanka is among the world leaders in the design of batik. Batik galleries and factories offer batik from simple single-coloured designs to intricate multi-coloured masterpieces. For centuries, spices have been one of Sri Lanka's celebrated exports. Spices are mostly grown in home gardens (as a home industry) and used not only to flavour food but also for medicine and cosmetics. Thereafter, continue to Kandy, the last kingdom of Sri Lanka and explore the beautiful city (Approx Travel time from Matale to Kandy: 01 to 01 ½ hour).

Kandy is a lovely city, the Hill Capital and the last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings retains an aura of grandeur, which time has not affected. Encircled by hills, with a tranquil lake in its centre, it is the site of the renowned "Temple of the Tooth". Kandy and its satellite villages are the centre of the island’s handicraft industry and its traditional dances are the most spectacular in the country. The Temple of the Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the City of Kandy. It is considered the foremost sacred place of worship in the Buddhist World. According to legend, the tooth was taken from theBuddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. It immediately became an object of great reverence and was enshrined in a series of nested jewelled reliquaries. On the outside, the temple buildings are not magnificent or elaborately decorated. While with red roofs, they cluster around Kandy Lake. In striking contrast to the plain exterior, the interiors of the temple buildings are richly carved and decorated with inlaid woods, ivory and lacquer. The relic of the tooth is kept in a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks. On Completion, Proceed to Nuwara Eliya ( Approx Travel Time - 02 ½ hrs to 03 hrs drive).

Nuwara Eliya is set in the heart of tea-country, a beautiful town where the British succeeded in creating a replica of the English countryside, with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen Anne. Well-kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican church, a famous golf course and beautiful parks give the place an air of nostalgia. Situated 6,200 feet above sea level, the air is cool and fresh – a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city life. On arrival check-in to the hotel.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya / Ella / Udawalawa
After Breakfast, check out from the hotel and Proceed to Udawalawa via Ella (Approx Travel time from Nuwara Eliya to Ella: 01 1/2 -02 HRS). Ella is a small sleepy village positioned high in the mountains, on the southern edge of Sri Lanka's Hill Country. It's situated in the middle of beautiful countryside, with small vegetable plots in the valleys, tea plantations on the hill slopes and forests on the tops. On arrival check-in to the hotel. In the evening, head out on a safari at Udawalawa National Park, Udawalawa, located approximately 200 km south-east of Colombo city, is a major ecotourism destination in Sri Lanka. It is most famous for the many elephants that live there (about 400 in total). During a visit, it is not unusual to see whole herds of adults and young elephants feeding or bathing and playing in the water! In addition to this main attraction, the park is home to many water buffalo, water monitor lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard, as well as being an exciting location for bird enthusiasts. On completion, return to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the hotel amenities.

Overnight stay at the Grand Udawalawe, Centuria Wild or Similar.
Day 7: Udawalawa / Galle / Kosgoda
After breakfast, check out from the hotel and proceed to the colonial coastal town of Galle (Approx Travel time from Udawalawa to Galle: 2 ½ - 3 HRS). Galle is a coastal town where the Dutch presence is still visible. Galle was an ancient port (said to be the legendary Tarshish of the Bible), and the first international commerce and trade centre. Today, Galle is the bustling provincial capital and administrative centre of the south. It is famous for its lovely Unawatuna Bay, where the sea is reef protected and therefore safe for swimming. The old Dutch “Star Fort” (a World Heritage Site) covering 36 hectares, the well-preserved Groote Kerk (Dutch Church), Dutch Government House, the New Oriental Hotel(built in 1684) old bell tower and a tide-based Sewage-System, also introduced by the Dutch. In Galle, they still make the Dutch ‘pillow-lace’ and do fine ebony carving and gem polishing. Thereafter continue to Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery (Approx Travel time from Galle to Kosgoda: 1 ½ - 2 HRS) Turtle Hatchery: ‘The beaches of Kosgoda are the nesting grounds for five species of marine turtles. They are the Green turtle, the Leatherback, the Hawksbill the Loggerhead and the Olive Ridley. All5 species have been recorded to nest along specific areas of Sri Lanka’s coast.
