When it comes to attractions, none are more beloved than the Clérigos Tower, which sits high on a hill overlooking the rest of the city. Day 4: Porto - Embark on Cruise
A mesmerising city carved in granite, in Porto you’ll find the old and the new happily rubbing along side by side. The gleaming azulejo tiles adorning church walls and townhouse facades are one of the typical sights of Portugal’s second-largest city. And all around you'll find your senses lost in the sound of clinking port glasses, the taste of fresh Atlantic cuisine and the beauty of its architecture. The old town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is pure poetry. Let the Douro welcome you with open arms, while you soak up the ship’s atmosphere on the sun deck and enjoy your first hours in Portugal. Welcome aboard!
Day 5: Porto - Regua - Pinhao
Today you'll have the opportunity to delve into Régua, the largest city on the banks of the Douro in this wine-growing valley. The scenery in this region is simply mesmerising thanks to the pristine river, which meanders past steep slate slopes and terraces clad with vines. It is such a remarkable place that the Alto Douro has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The town played a key role in the production and marketing of Port wine – which was transported away by sailing boat – as early as the 18th century. If you'd like to discover more about the area's rich Port history, visit the Douro Museum, which provides a wealth of information about the world’s first protected wine-growing area. Later, we recommend taking a walk to the popular viewing platforms São Leonardo da Galafura and São Salvador do Mundo to enjoy river landscape panoramas and spot the elegant bridges that lead into town. The old centre is particularly atmospheric too, with traditional houses and churches jostling for position.
The little town of Pinhão is located in the famous Port wine region, in the area where the Douro and its surrounding landscape are at their most picturesque. Surrounded by enchanting vineyards and the quintas that produce the wine, today is all about seeing why this sun-kissed area, and its famous produce, are so renowned. To get there, you can either follow walking trails with glorious views or go by water soaking up interesting stretches of the river. One of the best-known walking trails takes you from the Douro bridge up seven kilometres of the hilly Rua Praça de Oliveira as far as the Casal de Loivos viewing point. The town itself is very unspoilt with a lovely atmosphere and great local restaurants, some lining the water's edge. Be sure to take a look at the Linha do Douro train station, which is decorated with richly coloured azulejo tiles.
Day 7: Vega de Terron (Spain) - Barca d'Alva
Forming the border of Portugal and Spain, and the turnaround point for your Douro cruise before you begin wending your way back down the river valley, Vega de Terrón sits where the Douro meets the Águeda River. Charmingly unspoiled and rustic, Vega de Terrón will only demand a couple of hours of your time to amble the quiet streets and see friendly locals go about their day, but its most famous export, its Port, will invite you to linger a little longer. Its position means it’s the ideal place to sample other local towns and regions too - perhaps getting an authentic taste of life in Western Spain, or enjoying the superb flora and fauna of the area's countryside, bathed in sunshine.
Barca d'Alva is as far as you can reach on the Douro before hitting Spain, and glorious, golden Salamanca. A buzzing historic university city, Salamanca is almost magical in its beauty and vibrancy. Crammed with awe-inspiring buildings and monuments, you cannot visit Salamanca without seeing Plaza Mayor lit up in the evening and feeling the pulse of life flowing through its streets. Amidst rolling countryside where Portugal meets Spain lies sleepy Pocinho. It's an ideal place to soak up the laidback natural surrounds of rural life carrying on as it has for the last few hundred years.
Day 9: Pinhao - Regua - Bitetos
A tiny port climbing up the Douro Valley, Bitetos squeezes in more than its fair share of history. Dotted around town, you'll find crumbling remains, just the tip of the iceberg of the many Roman ruins that scatter this area. Narrow medieval alleys navigate up hilly streets alive now with the sounds of day-trippers rather than the boatmen who plied this river for centuries. A riverfront beach, mini marina and access to acres of exciting walks and hikes make Bitetos prime territory for exploring the area's al fresco delights too.
Enjoy stunning sunset views across the Douro Valley as you sail to Caix da Lixa this evening.
Day 11: Departure from Porto
After breakfast, depart from the boat and enjoy a return transfer from the Port to Porto Airport where you'll board your flight home.
