The Portuguese island of Madeira is a lush paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 600 miles from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and 500 miles from the coast of Morocco. Touring the island is highly recommended - only 32 miles long and 12 miles wide, this incredibly surprising sub-tropical island rises to almost 6,000 feet at its highest point. Madeira has an enormous variety of exotic sub-tropical vegetation with a mass of flowers in every garden, spectacular mountains and deep valley scenery, pine forests, waterfalls and craggy cliffs, and a network of vines that cover the hillsides providing grapes to make the famous Madeira Wine.
