Lagos, a jewel of the Algarve, captivates with its golden beaches, dramatic cliffs and historic streets steeped in centuries of maritime heritage. One of Portugal’s oldest ports, its origins date back more than 2,000 years, when it was known as Lacobriga. Today, echoes of this long history blend seamlessly with the town’s relaxed seaside spirit.
Must-sees:
- Ponta da Piedade: A spectacular headland of towering cliffs, sea arches and grottoes, best admired on a boat trip at sunset.
- Praia do Camilo: A postcard-perfect cove of golden sand and turquoise waters, reached by a wooden staircase descending the cliffs.
- Old Town Walls: The 16th-century fortifications that still encircle the historic centre, where cobbled lanes and whitewashed houses preserve the city’s timeless atmosphere.

Lagos is around 90 km from Faro Airport, accessible in just over an hour by car. The town is easy to explore on foot, though car hire is recommended for discovering the Algarve’s wider treasures. The best time to visit is during the summer months, when the Algarve is at its most vibrant, with warm seas, lively streets and long, sun-drenched days.
