DAY 2: SAN JOSÉ - TORTUGUERO
Tortuguero, in the north of the Caribbean, is one of Costa Rica's most popular ecotourism destinations and was established in 1970 to protect nesting sea turtles. The canals, rivers and lagoons of Tortuguero National Park allow for the study of rainforest, freshwater and marine biology, a paradise for research and ecotourism. Enjoy a boat transfer to Tortuguero, a fantastic introduction to the natural wonders of the rainforest. This village has a small population of about 500 inhabitants, and there are no cars!

Prior to December 2010, Arenal Volcano was one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world and put on a majestic daily show as it spewed molten rock and ash from its summit. Today, there are no more lava eruptions, but you can still see smoke and ash coming from the top of the volcano!

The Rincón de la Vieja volcano area is a beautiful region rich in ecological treasures. With more than 34,000 acres, this area has two volcanoes, 32 rivers and streams, and an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Rincón de la Vieja is home to a wide variety of rainforests, including dwarf cloud and mountain ecosystems. Exotic and rare flora and fauna find refuge here, including kinkajous, pumas, a variety of monkeys, sloths, tapirs and jaguars. Rare emerald toucans and blue-crowned motmots shine in the sun, as do bright orchids.
Rincón de la Vieja is about 15 miles northeast of the city of Liberia, which is the capital of Guanacaste province. During your stay you can explore the Rincón de la Vieja National Park on your own or enjoy the hotel's activities.

Located on the slopes of the Tenorio Volcano, this unique river boasts magnificent turquoise waters. Walk the 7km path through the forest, passing through a magical waterfall, by a blue lagoon, and past the viewpoint of Tenorio Volcano and its surrounding hills. On the way back walk along the banks of the river before a well-deserved lunch.
Arenal: Arenal Volcano National Park & Boat
Enjoy a short boat ride from Arenal Lake dam to the entrance of La Península, a trail through the National Park forest. Discover incredible viewpoints, and look out for rare birds. Visit areas that were once destroyed by volcanic activity and are now in the process of regeneration.
Arenal: La Fortuna Waterfall Horse Back Riding
This horseback riding tour starts at the foot of the mountain and heads up through beautiful forest terrain. Walk 500 meters into the forest to reach the waterfall, which is 70 m high. At the base of the waterfall there is a natural pool, perfect for a dip in the fresh water.
