Your Destination —
The mountains –particularly the High Atlas – offer simple, breathtaking pleasures: night skies glistening in the thin air, and views over a fluffy cloudbank from the Tizi n’Test pass. On lower ground, there are rugged coastlines, waterfalls and caves in forested hills, and the mighty desert.
When you hit town and join the crowds, you follow a fine tradition of nomads and traders stretching back centuries. Unesco has bestowed World Heritage status on the Fez medina, the world’s largest living medieval Islamic city, and on the carnivalesque street-theatre of the Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakech.
Start at action-packed Djemaa el-Fna and head north into Marrakech’s maze of souqs, where Berber tribes once traded slaves, gold, ivory and leather, and where modern tourists scour people-packed alleys for carpet bargains and babouches. If you look carefully, you’ll also spot a number of creative new boutiques and galleries. They signify the evolving face of the medina as a new generation of craftsmen and artists try to connect the city’s hankering for modernity with its traditional craft heritage.

Your Excursions —
Set off for an excursion of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, which serve as Marrakech's ever-present backdrop. Following a morning pick-up from Shems Moon Suite & Spa, you'll head out of the city by 4-wheel drive vehicle to begin your tour. Travelling through Morocco’s majestic countryside offers a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, and a rare glimpse into a more relaxed way of life in this magical part of the world. First stop at the panoramic view of the lake “Lalla Takerkoust”.
Next, drive over the Kik Plateau (1800m), an unforgettable place with stunning views of the mountains and valleys and very popular with paragliders. Continue through Moulay Brahim Shrine and Asni Village to Sidi Fares - you will notice an amazing scenery change from saffron-colored fields to steeper slopes covered with oak and walnut trees and cut by river-filled gorges. Take a short walk in Sidi Fares area and visit a local Berber house. Enjoy a fresh mint tea with the hospitable family and see the smiling faces of happy locals living a lifestyle very different to Morocco’s city-folk, and gain insight into an ancestral way of living which many thought had disappeared long ago.
Pass through the natural park of Oukaimden, see shepherds tending flocks on isolated pastures, and catch glimpses of the tiny houses and immense boulders that dot the countryside. Take in views of peaks that soar to nearly 10,000 feet while blending with a deep-blue sky and providing a contrast to the desolate mountainside. Partake in a traditional lunch at La Kasbah of Ourika with amazing panoramic views from the restaurant overlooking the Toubkal mountain and the Ourika river before heading back toward the mountain forests to the Shems Moon Spa & Lodge.
Go back in time and discover some of Marrakech's historical landmarks. Your knowledgeable guide enlightens you on the intrigue surrounding the city’s illustrious buildings. Partake in one of North Africa’s most famous traditions as you drink a glass of invigorating mint tea.
Visit the austere Koutoubia Mosque and its minaret – a beautifully proportioned example of Hispano-Moresque art rising 80m into the sky. Discover the El Bahia Palace, a 19th-century building with a 2-acre garden and a haphazard arrangement of inner courtyards and apartments. Visit the 14th century Ben Youssef Medersa, one of the most beautiful buildings in Marrakech – with its subtle use of decoration, achieve through a balances combination of stucco & mosaic, marble and cedarwood, white marble basin & pillars. Drink a glass of mint tea on the way, see some craftsmanship & visit a Berber apothecary to buy some spices or magic potions.
Leave Marrakech behind and head towards the Atlantic coast of Essaouira. Your guide tells you about the history of the town and shows you characteristics of the 15th and 18th centuries, such as ramparts, the fishing port and harbour, Skala (market) and its quaint Medina.
Stroll through the picturesque blue and white town with the ocean in the background. Meander through its maze-like streets and explore its tranquil squares with white houses and street-side cafés. Your guide explains the Portuguese influence in the town – it was once called "Mogador" – and shows you the Portuguese-built medieval citadel.
It is then time to go to Skala, the municipal market. See countless artisans working in their workshops and the many arts that skilled craftsmen create. Walk through markets where stalls groan under the weight of colourful fruit and fresh vegetables, or simply wander through the harbour and witness the hive of activity at the water's edge. If you choose to, enjoy a scrumptious lunch served at one of the many restaurants that line the coast (not included). Before heading back to Marrakech, your guide takes you to key points in the city, including the port, Medina – the old town filled with souks – and Mellah, a Jewish quarter.
