In 2001 the cultural space of Jemaa el-Fna Square was named as a 'Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity' by UNESCO. Following its history as a central meeting place within Marrakech since the fourteenth century, the Square is representative of a unique concentration of popular Moroccan cultural traditions, largely consisting of performance through musical, religious and artistic expressions.
Whilst the city centre is largely ever changing and adapting, Jemaa el-Fna Square continues to retain the significance of its history by providing a variety of traditional services throughout day and night. Whilst more modern conveniences such as dental practices can now be found in the area, traditional medicine, fortune-telling, preaching, and henna tattooing dominate the market and create a buzz of excitement at all times of the day. In addition to the services on offer, tourists can also look forward to many performances by local storytellers, traditional poets and snake charmers. Following the footsteps of bards (imayazen) from the past, today performers use oral expression and a combination of speech and gesture to teach, entertain and charm their audiences. Adapting their art to contemporary contexts, they now improvise on an outline of an ancient text, making their recital accessible to wider audiences and tourists from all over the world.

Learn all about the history of Marrakech and visit the city's most famous sites and landmarks.
