The main square in the Medina - Djemaa El-Fna (1.2km) - is surrounded by endless labyrinths of souks and alleyways. Djemma El-Fna is a 'must visit' place since there is always something to see, both day and at night, be it snake charmers, acrobats, fortune-tellers or the musicians and food stalls. At night, the square comes to life as people navigate toward the exotic aromas and the entertaining sights.
The Kasbah, surrounding the Djemaa El-Fna, portrays a calmer atmosphere. It is home to the Royal Palace (2.4km), the former El-Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs. The Kasbah has its own little bazaars (Souikas), food stalls, and restaurants for travellers to enjoy.

Morocco, the culinary star of North Africa, is the doorway between Europe and Africa. Much imperial and trade influence has been filtered through and blended into Moroccan culture. Moroccan cooking is characterised by rich spices - cumin, coriander, saffron, chillies, dried ginger, cinnamon and paprika. Lamb is the principal meat and couscous and granular semolina are central to Moroccan cuisine.
The Medina offers an array of delicious food stalls - tagine, couscous, brochette and varieties of soups are the most popular, while some offer more unusual specialities. Each vendor has his own recipe and no two are the same.
For more upscale eateries you generally must go outside the Medina to Ville Nouvelle. However, Diaffa is an elegant restaurant in one of the oldest buildings in the Medina, and offers excellent Moroccan cuisine.
